Rick Cheatham served as a fire captain with the Anaheim Fire Department for 25 years, and it defined his life. He dealt with many tragedies, but they weren't limited to work. In 2013, his son was brutally murdered, and it forever changed him, both as a parent and a person.
When he retired, he expected to work with his hands to keep busy, but life went in a different direction. Shortly after retiring, Rick had an incident and ended up paralyzed, downward from the chest.
This sent Rick into the darkest patch of his life, where he almost gave up on everything. He fought to walk again. One day, a motivational speaker showed him that Rick that he was still useful.
Now, Rick is paying that forward, working as a transformational speaker and life coach. In today's episode, we cover a few subjects, with a heavy focus on forgiveness, hardship, transformation, first responder mental health, and the impact of 9/11 on the firefighting industry.
