On today's episode of Yours Mentally we talk about the Polyvagal Theory. This episode is in conversation with Jahan Ara Chughtai who is a Trauma Informed Psychotherapist.
We begin the episode by asking Jahan to give an overview of the Central nervous system and the Peripheral nervous system and its structures for our listeners who aren't familiar with the basics of the nervous system.
We then go on to talk about what is the vagus nerve.
Jahan then gives us a little information about who Stephan Porges and Deb Dana are and what they do.
Jahan then tells us what exactly is the Polyvagal theory.
We also talk about how can the use of the social engagement system be beneficial for us?
Jahan then goes on to explain what is Neuroception, what is co-regulation and what are cues of safety and cues of danger.
We then discuss what populations does the Polyvagal Theory work best with.
We also talk about how does trauma affect our nervous system’s response?
Lastly, we talk about how therapists incorporate the Polyvagal theory in their practice and how does it help their clients?
NOTE: At 16:06 of the podcast, there is an audio glitch which was not fixable. Jahan says the words "we meet people" in that glitch.
