Is there life after death? An estimated 9 million Americans from believers to atheists have had a near dear experience, according to the National Institute of Health. This is happening all over the world and 17% occur to people who are clinically dead for a several minutes. On the 50th episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, Army Veteran and Psychotherapist Brian Hoyland shares his remarkable near death experience that he claims took him into the presence of God. Brian's military experience exposed him to toxic chemicals that led to heart failure. He underwent a heart transplant like Paul Cardall. The two discuss what it's like to recover from a heart transplant.

About Brian Hoyland

I began my adult life by joining the U.S. Army Military Police Corps after high school; I served my country all over the world and was disabled due to injuries sustained during service. I then went on to obtain a master’s degree in counseling psychology and started working as a psychotherapist with other combat veterans in the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. I then worked as a program director and clinical supervisor with criminal offenders for the prison system in MN. I took a job with a private company working with recently released offenders to advance my career and it came with a large pay increase, but 4 months after I started I suffered a major heart failure and almost died. This was just the beginning of what my life would be like for the next couple of years.

After having been exposed to toxic chemicals while in the military, I developed an autoimmune disease that would eventually kill me. One night, 8/2016, I suffered sudden and mysterious heart failure, the cause of which took several months, much testing and quite a bit of suffering to discover. The whole time God was gently calling me to repair my relationship with him and it was working.

Then, just after the cause was discovered I had a massive cardiac arrest and died for 10 minutes 01/2017. Yet, in that moment, I had a near-death experience, visited heaven and talked with Jesus. I never lost consciousness and I remember my 7 hour fight in the ER, my death, Heaven and my return without a break in my conscious thought. This experience transformed my life as I learned valuable lessons about myself, my life, my faith and our God.

When I died I stood face-to-face with God and God showed only love to me and I could feel that love was the same for every human being and it was pure and that God is LOVE (1 John 4:7-8)! I documented my experience in my journal, because While God did let me choose to return, I had failed to ask him how long I could expect to have until I returned to Heaven, so I wanted to be sure if it wasn’t long that I would be able to share it.

Amazingly, I lived for another 2 years and received a heart transplant on Ash Wednesday 2019. Upon biopsy of my heart after transplant, my Mayo Clinic transplant team told me that there was not a medical reason for my heart to have been functioning at all with such extensive damage. I however knew the cause.

So I decided that I must write a book about my story. I tried to share how all of the suffering I endured leading up to the NDE and for the 2 years following until I received my heart transplant, helped me to see God’s hand in my life and even during extreme suffering just how faithful and gentle God has been with me. And I want to share this with anyone who will listen.

I want people to take away that “God loves them and has a plan for them and will stop at nothing to accept them into heaven if they are willing to trust in him. When I wrote my book I was pressured to take the central focus out and replace it with a more acceptable term so as to increase sales. Can you guess what that was? If you guessed Jesus you were right. Everyone felt referencing Jesus so strongly would turn people away and limit my audience, but how could I have the audacity to leave out my savior, the only reason for my visit at all.
