58. Overcoming Avoidance

In this episode, I talk about the process of overcoming avoidance. How it often can be a complex issue of it being something that we ultimately do not want to do and may have the conscious awareness of how it does not serve us, but can struggle to break out of using avoidance as a coping mechanism. I share how for me, I was becoming overwhelmed with past traumatic memories along with needing to face the fact that I just left a trauma bonded relaitonship, but it was all too much, I did not have the proper tools, and what my body knew to get through my days, was to avoid. It was a process of slowly but surely learning how to chip away at the avoidance tendencies to choose to be with discomfort instead of suppress. Through this process, the biggest revelation I had was that happiness, being at peace with myself, took work.
Tips to overcome avoidance:
- Start small
- Keep promises to yourself
- Quick somatic tools
- Curious compassion when wanting to avoid
- Let this be a trial and error and process
- Ask yourself, "What's the alternative?"
- Looking at avoidance through the lens of self-love
