Chester Brown was born in Montreal, but currently resides in Toronto. He is the author of seven books and is best known for the non-fiction graphic novels Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography (2003) and Paying for It: A Comic-Strip Memoir About Being a John (2011) — soon to be a motion picture. During the Toronto Comic Arts Festival at the Doug Wright Awards, Chester spoke about the late Joe Matt who passed away last year and mentioned his impact on the Toronto comic creation scene especially in the category of autobiography.
In 2003, Chester published Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography after receiving the first Canada Council for the Arts grant awarded to a graphic novelist. The graphic novel was critically and commercially acclaimed for its powerful, minimalist style, and the story about the Métis leader became the first graphic novel on a Canadian non-fiction best-seller list. In 2024, Chester created a Louis Riel stamp for Canada Post as part of a set honouring Canadian cartoonists.
