As the holidays approach, we start to think about doing more entertaining at home. Kim likes to delight and surprise her guests by creating a visual dining experience, before the meal even appears. In this first part of her Tablescape Series, Kim explains how she designs unique tables.
How does Kim approach doing a tablescape that is unique? Beginning with an idea or theme, Kim suggests that we should start with what we have and build around it.
Then she advises tablescaping in layers. The first layer is the table, then the linens, dishes, drinking glasses and flatware. She always includes candles and some kind of centerpiece or floral arrangement.
By using things we already have and thinking about them in clever ways (such as using outdoor lanterns on the dining room table), we can add an element of surprise while keeping down expenses.
Kim also thinks about multiple dimensions and other surfaces, including the chandelier and outer walls of the room. These additional layers can be appreciated both before and during a meal, adding richness to a wonderful dining experience.

We recently visited Steele Mansion in Painesville, Ohio, and asked the proprietor, Carol Shamakian, to describe how she and her family came to own this place. She told us that her husband went to the grocery store one day and came home to say, “Honey, I bought a mansion.” Unfortunately this once grand home, built in the 1860’s, had been deemed unsalvageable and was slated for demolition. Only the vision of this plucky family could see the possibilities in restoring the home. Listen as we learn how they brought Steele Mansion back to life, and created the gracious inn that it is today. #interiordesign #restoration #mansion #remodeling #interiordesignnortheasternohio #steelemansion…

In this episode, we meet Chris Bores, a neighbor of Mark Goode. Chris and his wife Erin moved to their 100-year-old home in Shaker Heights, Ohio, in 2018, along with their two young daughters. They knew when they moved in that they would be doing some repairs, starting with the bathrooms. Since Chris had done a lot of hands-on improvements at their previous home, he planned on doing a lot of the work himself. After several plumbers recommended a complete renovation and he had started listening to this podcast, Chris and Erin decided to hire Kim to help them with the re-design of their two bathrooms. We are going to follow along with them during this project. Please join us as we discuss their priorities, needs, style preferences, sourcing of materials, and how to carve out every extra inch in these two small bathrooms.Contact Kim at kimcarroll13@gmail.com…

In Episode 16, Mark Goode introduced us to the basics of smart lighting for the home. Now in Episode 18, he goes further into the use of smart technology, cautioning that is more complex to set up than the manufacturers would have us believe. Mark leads us through a history of the development of this technology, offering a visual graph that is available on my blog (kimcarrollinteriors.com, Episode 18, blog entry dated 21 February, 2022). In his discussion, he explains how manufacturers have used Zigbee, wi-fi and bluetooth to enable consumers to control devices in their homes. Phillip Jeffries is an innovative wall covering company. Utilizing many different organic materials, such as grasscloth, water hyacinth, banana leaves, and wood veneers, the design team at Phillip Jeffries creates beautiful paperbacked coverings for walls. Sales representative Crystal Brown takes us through the beginnings of this leading-edge company, describing how the two brothers (Phillip and Jeffrey) have focused on working with in-house artists, as well as artisans all over the world, to create their unique wall coverings. In addition to hundreds of standard designs, they hand screen custom prints, made to order, on any of 30 available grounds, with standard or custom colors. When arriving home on a dark evening, it is reassuring to be able to turn on the lights before you even open the door. Technology built into our cellphones and smart light bulbs enables us to control the lighting in our homes. We can turn lights off and on, vary the intensity and even change the color of the light! In this episode we discuss the beginnings of home automation, the convergence of technologies that allow the human voice to interact with computers and how to “put your toes in the water” with smart lighting. In our first podcast show recorded “on the road,” we sit down with Thom Capretta, manager of Atelier Lapchi, a custom rug company with a showroom in the Ohio Design Centre and its factory in Nepal. We learn how, in this day of technology and automation, Atelier Lapchi weavers use Tibetian wool and silk to create custom rugs in both traditional and contemporary styles. Each hand-woven rug is a unique work of art. Because they own the factory, dye their own wool, employ the weavers (no child labor), and ship in their company containers, Atelier Lapchi avoids most supply chain issues. Their process goes from initial design to fabrication to delivery in a few short months. Thom shares with us the collections of Atelier Lapchi, color trends, fibers and textures, care and cleaning of fine rugs, as well as some great stories. You can reach Thom at thom@lapchi.com #nepalrugs #customrugs #atleierlapchi #interiordesign #kimcarrollinteriors #handwovenrugs…

In this episode, Kim Carroll discusses three lighting options: ambient, task, and accent lighting. She discusses the the many different fixtures available to us, as well as a few “Lighting Atrocities” that can make our lives really uncomfortable. The human eye has evolved in natural daylight since the humans first lived on earth. We are finely tuned to the ways that it comes into our homes, from a bright summer afternoon to the soft grey of a winter morning. But we all need artificial light to make our way through a dark house, prepare supper, read a book, write a report, or find a lost toy. Well-placed lighting can set a mood and focus our attention, but how do we plan for good lighting? Ambient lighting, such as a ceiling fixture, illuminates an overall space, while task lighting, like pendants over a kitchen island, focuses the light where we need it. Accent lighting can call attention to the fixture itself, such as a Tiffany lamp, or pull someone's attention to a focal point, like a light over a painting. #interiordesign #interiordesigners #clevelandinteriordesign #interiorlighting…

In Episode 13, Kim discusses window treatments, why they are needed, and the many options you can choose from. Did you know that the word “window” comes from the Old Norse words for “eye” and “wind,” or “the eye of the house through which the wind comes through”? What happens to this romantic notion when too much wind comes in, or too much rain or hot sunlight? Over the centuries, people have created many different ways to control light and heat, as well as prying eyes. As Kim discusses in this episode, in addition to being purely practical, window treatments become an integral part of the design of a room, whether they are simple roller shades, elaborate draperies, or classic wood blinds. In this episode, Kim discusses these hard and soft treatment options, and includes a few “window atrocities.” #window #windowtreatments #woodblinds #shades…

In Episode 12, Kim explores the different elements that, when used thoughtfully, will help to achieve a balanced design. Style can be formal or informal, traditional or contemporary, country or industrial, but it should weave a thread of continuity throughout the home. Color, another very personal choice, will influence a room's design. So will the high or low contrast of color. Varying the textures in a space will make the design more interesting. Scale can be a tricky concept to understand, but keeping in mind the human scale is most important. Straight and curvilinear lines both play a part in the way a space feels. Finally, Kim discusses the different types of symmetry which can make a room feel formal and traditional, or relaxed and unexpected.…

As we prepare to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, I find that my guests are always delighted when we gather around a thoughtfully decorated table setting. It can be formal or casual, extravagant or tailored, depending on your personal style. Start with what you already have (furnishings, dishes, glassware, etc.) and build around it. Perhaps you are having guests stay for a few days and you would like a simply decorated kitchen table, where more informal meals will be shared. Or maybe your children are now old enough to appreciate a lovely family meal and dining with “the good china.” If your plans include an early evening event and you want to invite people back for a light buffet, the food itself can be part of the tablescape. Or, you may have beautiful china and crystal that you would love to use but are hesitant about how to make it look its best. In this episode we talk about planning tables for various holiday functions. You can also see photos of the tables we discuss on my website, http://www.kimcarrollinteriors.com . With the holidays approaching, many of us will have family and friends coming to stay with us. How can we prepare for them to have a wonderful, memorable experience? A comfortable guest room is a great way to say ”Welcome!” In order to prepare a guest room, there are many things which are common sense, so much so that we don't focus on them. A thorough cleaning and careful curating of personal collections are a great start. Of course, clean fresh bedding is a must, as well as storage for clothing and luggage. Various kinds of lighting will offer safety and comfortable reading, while simple window treatments can provide light control and privacy. A TV and connection to wi-fi are very important in our digital world. Other helpful items to have on hand include toiletries, chargers for electronic devices and a hair dryer. As in many things, it is the attention to detail which can elevate a simple visit to an extraordinary experience! Go here to download the Guest Room checklist! An interesting tablescape invites our guests to have a wonderful experience, to “eat first with their eyes.” It requires careful thought about the details but need not be very expensive. In Episode 9, Kim has assembled four different tablescapes for Thanksgiving. Each tablescape has a unique menu, created by Kim's son Jamie. You can see each of these tablescapes at this link: https://kimcarrollinteriors.com/blog/2021/11/15/thanksgiving-tablescapes-podcast-episode-9 The first tablescape is very casual, beginning with what one already owns and building around it. The focus is on using everyday dishes, layering texture upon texture, with elements of surprise like an outdoor lantern. The second tablescape is more of an urban farmhouse style. Natural elements like a stone tabletop, wood, pinecones and berries combine with tin buckets filled with flowers and twine-wrapped napkins to create a welcoming setting. A clean-lined contemporary style for the third Tablescape began with vintage mid-century moire glazed metal trays. Square black plates anchor the setting, while tall gold-tone candlesticks and dainty magnolia blossoms keep the feeling light, airy and upscale. The fourth tablescape is more traditionally formal. Kim encourages us to pull out “the good stuff,” polishing the silver and arranging our best china. She also draws the eye to outer parts of the room with candlelight and dessert plates on a side table. Please share with us photos of your tablescapes! Send us photos of your designs and a menu of what you plan to serve (or a photo of what you did serve!). We want to share these with our listeners so they can be inspired by your creativity. Email your photos and information to kimcarroll13@gmail.com We’ll be sharing your creativity with our audience in future episodes.…

We are influenced by design trends every day. In Episode 7, Kim explores where trends come from. Manufacturers, world events, technology, and designers themselves influence how we decorate our homes. Some trends have a profound impact on the design world, such as mid-century style, and have had an extraordinary resurgence, while others just disappear. Did you know that the use of light paint on interior walls was developed by a former actress turned interior designer? Did you know that shag carpet was a trend nearly 50 years ago and has returned? Some examples of furniture pieces started out as trends but, because of the integrity of their design, they become classics. Kim discusses some of these classic pieces and why they’ve remained popular with designers. But design trends can be exciting and bring a new look and feel to your home. Kim discusses how to incorporate those trends into a good home design.…

In designing a room or a house, there are many preconceptions and expectations that we bring with us. We may think that a room should have a certain look because our family always decorated this way, or because that is what the retail marketing and social media are showing. Shouldn't everything match? Can't I just buy everything I love and put it together? Clients also have expectations of the design coming together in a few short weeks, when the reality is that it may take quite a bit longer to line up a contractor or wait for furnishings. These preconceptions and expectations can derail a good design. In this episode, Kim discusses how she manages client expectations and encourages an openness to fresh ways of thinking about a space. Maya Angelou wrote “The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are, and not be questioned.” In Episode 5, Kim explains how she works with clients to create their own very personal spaces, the home that Maya Angelou describes. Kim’s process begins with a “dreaming phase” in which clients are encouraged to imagine their home, free from constraints of time and money. Then comes the budget and structure phase, which includes floor plans, furniture layouts and discussing the constraints in the plan (architecture, specific furniture pieces, budget, time frame). Plans are made to maximize the use of space, from repurposing furniture and rooms to storage options. Next, to fill in with the purchase of new furniture and accessories, Kim describes how she uses workrooms, showrooms, retail stores and consignment shops, sourced over the years she has worked in the design field. Finally, she talks about adding personality with photos, collections, and special mementos. Kim, who is based in Cleveland, OH, can be reached at kimcarroll13@gmail.com .
