The Sifu Mimi Chan Show

I loved catching up with my friend Dr. Mark Cheng driving around the streets of LA. Literally. This episode was recorded while driving around the city. Mark’s insights into the philosophy of martial arts training go far beyond physical techniques. Our conversation explored what it means to train with intention, the responsibility of carrying on a martial arts legacy, and the deeper purpose of the arts—not just to refine skill but to cultivate better human beings. Plus Oscar chimes in from the back seat to give another perspective on the conversation. It was by far the best time I’ve had sitting in LA traffic. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. If you have, please rate my podcast on your platform of choice and share it with others! In our latest MiOsc podcast episode , we dive deep into martial arts philosophy , exploring the interplay between internal and external elements. Whether in the explosive movements of kung fu or the meditative flow of tai chi, these principles extend far beyond training, influencing our approach to life, work, and personal growth. True mastery in martial arts—and in life—comes from integrating both the internal and external. In our own journeys, finding this balance means knowing when to push forward and when to step back, when to exert effort and when to embrace stillness. Through this episode, we reflect on how martial arts philosophy is not just about self-defense but self-awareness. By embracing both external discipline and internal wisdom, we cultivate not only strong bodies but strong minds and spirits as well. How do you balance the internal and external elements in your own life? Would love to hear your thoughts on this episode! I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. In this episode I chat with actor Langley Kirkwood for an insightful conversation about the state of the world, creativity in turbulent times, and life from the vantage point of Cape Town, South Africa. Langley is known for his powerful performances on screen, especially on one of my favorite shows, Warrior. Beyond the camera, he is a thoughtful thinker, a lover of history, and an artist navigating a world that often feels like it’s unraveling. We dove into what it means to create when the world is in chaos—how are finds meaning and expression amidst political instability and global uncertainty. Langley emphasized the importance of keeping hope and never giving up! Warrior fans, yes, I asked about the state of the tv series! Listen on to get Langley’s take on where the series is headed… Plus find out what’s for dinner straight out of the Langley Kirkwood kitchen. Kung Fu, Connection, and Community: A Weekend to Remember This past weekend, the Wah Lum family came together in a truly special way to celebrate Sifu Bob Rosen’s 40th anniversary in Boston’s Chinatown . It was more than just a milestone; it was a testament to the strength of our community, the deep roots of our traditions, and the unbreakable bonds we share through our martial arts journey. Schools from Orlando, Knoxville , and Germany had the opportunity to visit all the New England Wah Lum schools, including Boston , Malden , Quincy , Methuen , and Taunton. The hospitality we received was overwhelming, and the spirit of Wah Lum was alive in every interaction, performance, and exchange of knowledge. What makes a gathering like this so unique is its ability to bring together people from all walks of life—different ages, backgrounds, and beliefs—all uniting around something central: Wah Lum system – a unique gift that my father gave to the world. Listen on for a full recap of our weekend and why more than ever, community is essential. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about whether we are in the midst of a revolution. We see protests, policy debates, and people speaking out against injustice, but is that enough? Is there real change happening, or are we just moving in circles, reacting to each new crisis as it comes? I often speak with activists, community leaders, and those who have dedicated their lives to fighting for justice. They all echo the same message: Change doesn’t happen by accident. It requires effort, strategy, and most of all—action. So, how do we fight back? How do we push for the societal change we need? 1. Educate Yourself—And Others Knowledge is power. Understanding systemic issues, the history behind them, and the ways they continue to impact marginalized communities is crucial. Read books, listen to podcasts, attend lectures, and most importantly—talk to people. Engage in uncomfortable conversations. Challenge misinformation. The more we know, the harder it is for injustice to hide. 2. Support and Amplify Marginalized Voices Revolutions don’t happen without the people most affected leading the way. Whether it’s racial justice, gender equality, or workers’ rights, those on the frontlines need support. Share their work, donate to their causes, and listen to their voices instead of speaking over them. 3. Use Your Skills for the Cause Not everyone is a protestor, and that’s okay. Change comes from many different forms of activism. If you’re a writer, use your words to educate and inspire. If you’re an artist, create work that sparks dialogue. If you’re an organizer, mobilize communities. The revolution needs all of us. 4. Vote, and Hold Leaders Accountable Yes, voting matters. But voting is not where our responsibility ends. We need to hold politicians accountable beyond election day. That means showing up to town halls, calling representatives, and making it clear that we demand action—not empty promises. 5. Build Community and Collective Power No one wins this fight alone. Find your people—whether it’s through local organizations, online activism, or grassroots movements. When we work together, we become a force that cannot be ignored. Every small action creates a ripple effect. 6. Don’t Get Comfortable Complacency is the enemy of progress. It’s easy to think, “I’ve done my part,” and step back. But the work of social justice is ongoing. Stay engaged. Stay involved. Keep learning, keep pushing, and keep showing up. The Revolution is What We Make It So, is there a revolution? Maybe. Maybe not. We have the power to push for the changes we want to see. The question is: Are we willing to do the work? I’d love to hear your thoughts. What actions do you take to fight for change? Let’s keep this conversation going—because silence is never an option. I’ve been enjoying these conversations and hope you have too. If you have, please rate my podcast on your platform of choice and share it with others! As the Year of the Snake arrives, Oscar and I sat down for another exciting MiOsc episode , looking back at all the things that made the Year of the Dragon unforgettable. From books that impacted us to movies we enjoyed, and most memorable moments—we explored some of our favorites from last year. Our conversation naturally find its way into the realm of travel and food. Last year was full of adventures, and it was no easy task narrowing down the most memorable destinations and events. Perhaps the most enriching part of our recap was revisiting the meaningful conversations we’ve had—both on the podcast and beyond. These moments of connection reminded us why I started the podcast in the first place: to build empathy, understanding, and growth. No “Best of” episode would be complete without some fun surprises. We each brought personal highlights—things that made us smile, whether big or small, significant or silly. The Year of the Dragon has been full of challenges and good times, but I’m grateful to take a moment to reflect and share all the things that made us laugh and cry. In this episode, I sit down with the legendary Coach Dan John , a name synonymous with wisdom in fitness and coaching. We have been doing a deep dive into the exploration of The Sword in the Stone for years. The theme for today centered on integrity. Dan says integrity isn’t just a moral principle—it’s about wholeness . In life, it means being the same person in every situation, doing what’s right even when it’s hard. You don’t need to have read the book in order to enjoy this episode, but I highly recommend it! I am very grateful to call Dan my friend and love the opportunity to learn from him.
