Today we are talking about ovulation and how to use your menstrual period to determine when you ovulate. If you don’t ovulate, then you will not get pregnant. It is important to understand when you ovulate to best gauge when to have sex in order to get pregnant.

Ovulation usually happens in the mid-part of your cycle. What does that mean? We are going to use three examples to demonstrate what this means.

The perfect woman (if she were to exist) has a 28-day cycle. This means that the end of one cycle to the beginning of the next cycle is a 28-day period of time. Day 1 of her cycle is the first day she sees any blood, even if it is light spotting. This woman will ovulate approximately 14 days before that bleeding begins.

She may ovulate on day 10 or any day through day 17. This woman should begin to have sex on day 10, and have sex every 48-hours for the optimal sperm count. This means that she should have sex on day 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18.

Now let’s give the example of the woman with the 21-day cycle. This woman ovulates from day 7 through day 14. She should have sex on day 7, 9 ,11, 13, and 15.

How about the woman with the 35-day cycle? She ovulates on day 14 through day 21. She should optimally have sex on day 14, 16, 18, 20, and 22.

It is important to have sex every 48-hours, not every two days. Why is 48-hours important? Say the woman ovulates on day 14 - Wednesday morning at 7:00 am. Her egg may die by 7:00 pm on Wednesday night.

The egg may last until the next morning at 7:00 am, but it is safe to say that it will die in 12 hours. If this woman has sex on Monday morning, then most of the man’s sperm will be dead within 48-hours. So, if she has sex at 5:00 am on Monday morning, then most of his sperm is dead by Wednesday morning at 5:00 am.

Say the woman ovulates at 7:00 am on Wednesday morning. If they don’t have sex in the next 12 - 24 hours then she will not conceive. So, it is very important to have sex in the 48-hour period. Don’t set a timer, because he won’t forget. Make a game out of it, and continue to have intimacy in the bed.
