Delayed gratification is the ability to resist the temptation of an immediate reward and instead wait for a future reward that is often greater. This concept is best known for the famous "Marshmallow Test" conducted by Stanford University in the 1960s. In the study, young children were offered the choice between one small reward (such as a marshmallow) that they could have right away, or two rewards if they were willing to wait a few minutes.
The results of the Marshmallow Test showed that the children who were able to wait for the larger reward had better outcomes in life, including higher SAT scores and lower rates of obesity. This suggests that the ability to delay gratification is an important factor in success and achievement.
