Ep 2: Prostate Cancer - the risk, the diagnosis and prevention
Manage episode 413396014 series 3557395
Welcome to the Cancer Support Suffolk podcast.
In this episode we talk about prostate cancer with John and Adrian, both diagnosed with prostate cancer, as well as Chris Booth from CHAPS (Men's Health Charity) and Peter Lobley, Macmillan Urology Nurse Specialist.
'More often than not - there are no symptoms for prostate cancer - which is why the PSA blood test is essential for men'. Peter Lobley.
'1 in 8 White Caucasian men have a lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer.
1 in 4 Black men have a lifetime risk of developing the disease, and at an earlier age too. Men who have a family history of prostate cancer are also at a higher risk'. Chris Booth
John and Adrian talk about their journey with prostate cancer, from diagnosis to treatment and recovery.
Adrian was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was about to have an operation to remove the prostate but a Urology consultant intervened from Cambridge and advised 'active surveillance' as his cancer was mild (PSA level 9). Adrian talks more about his journey, and how active surveillance has worked well for him.
John experienced a very fast diagnosis and was helped by Peter Lobley in making fast decisions regarding the action that needed to take place. John took Peter's advice and opted for radiotherapy as his PSA level was extremely high.
