Leyla Hussein is a consultant, psychotherapist, and international lecturer on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and gender rights. She currently works as the Global Advocacy Director and Deputy Team Leader of the Africa-led Movement to End FGM, fighting to eliminate violence against women and girls. In October 2020, Leyla was elected to become the first Black female Rector of the University of St Andrews and now works closely with a team of student activists to fight for more access, action, and accountability in higher education.
She is the founder of the Dahlia Project, a specialist psychotherapeutic and counseling service for survivors of FGM, and Magool, an organization promoting the rights and well-being of women and girls. Leyla is very experienced in providing safeguarding training to activists, well-being professionals, and others who confront the physical, psychological, and social implications of violence in their work. In 2020, Leyla co-founded Safe Spaces for Black Women alongside Fatima Hagi to create an emotional support and well-being community for Black women worldwide.
Leyla's work has been presented at Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Leeds, Exeter, and many Ivy League universities across the US. She is also a published writer, holding her own pages with the Huffington Post, Global Citizen, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and The Guardian. She frequently lobbies at a political level, advises policymakers, and triggers much-needed national and international debate.
