The Artist’s Toolbox, hosted by art industry experts Imane Bouhlou and Francesca Budini Gattai, is the podcast dedicated to supporting emerging artists with advice on art business careers. This show provides comprehensive solutions to help artists achieve clarity in their artistic research, make the most of the available digital tools and introduce themselves in the art world.

This week on the show Imane and Francesca had the pleasure to interview Joe Webster, a British plein-air painter who combines acrylics, spray paint, water-soluble materials and e-waste to create graffiti landscapes that respond to the environment. Webster captures the man-made imprint on nature while promoting climate optimism.

Webster has extensively exhibited in the UK, in Portugal with Galeria Corté Real, and in Australia with JahRoc Galleries. In 2016, he received the South West Academy’s Whitespace Award and in 2018 he published his first monograph titled Living Canvas. His artworks are held in private collections in the UK, Spain, Portugal, France, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, and the USA.

In this episode you will hear about:

  1. The artist’s journey and how he came to develop his current style
  2. Joe Webster’s thoughts on formal education as opposed to learning on the field
  3. The artist’s relationship with Nature and the environment
  4. Climate optimism and the importance of renewing our love for Nature to fight climate change
  5. The artist’s most memorable exhibition
  6. Joe Webster sharing the best advice he received as an artist
  7. How to recover from creative blocks and periods of self-doubt
