Did you watch the Netflix movie "The Great Hack"? This documentary did a great job of breaking down the crimes of Cambridge Analytica and making people aware of the information "propaganda" tactics used by Trump's campaign. However, I do feel like this Netflix documentary definitely also had a "fear-mongering" agenda trying to make people afraid of the "data monster" and make people afraid of the algorithm and the potential for information, and manipulation the social media platforms like Facebook have. Personally, I disagree. For the most part, your data on Facebook is used to show you the content that you are likely to be interested in. I don't buy into the idea that people can be so easily swayed by FB content more so - FB shows you more of the stuff you already agree with and confirms your biases.
Typically, when data is being used on FB it is for marketing and matching potential customers up to products that they are likely to be interested in. This incident where FB is being used to put propaganda content in front of people that will alter their opinions is because of Cambridge Analytica and not Facebook. At the end of the day, FB is a tech company. Clearly, there are some issues that need to be fixed and what happened is terrible - ( not understating that ) but I have to ask, do we REALLY need to blame the technology creator or should we look at the intentions of the people who are taking the technology and using it in a way that is ultimately manipulative if not harmful?
