Ghosting has undoubtedly risen in popularity over the past few years due to the rate in which technology is progressing. Without a standard way of communicating (such as Whatsapp or Facebook messenger), it has become effortless to drop everything and vanish out of somebody’s life. Ultimately, ghosting has become a coping mechanism for society to avoid awkward & uncomfortable exchanges over the internet.

According to multiple scientific studies, social rejection is known to activate the same neural pathways in the brain as physical pain. It’s the reason why we feel depressed and emotionally hurt when somebody ghosts us, or we face rejection within a social setting.

Although there is no proven way to avoid being ghosted, being honest & open about your feelings within a situation can help to encourage the other party to make their opinions also known.

You see, ghosting is directly associated with how uncomfortable people are willing to feel. If they don’t want to deal with the consequences of something they have done/said, they will try and ignore you to avoid any negative repercussions. They are mentally wired to believe that preventing uncomfortable situations is the most efficient way to maintain their happiness or reputation.

In a similar fashion to the so-called “real world,” people desire authenticity within digital relationships. If we do not believe that the person we are talking to will directly benefit our future, it can become commonplace to ghost them instead of putting in a continual effort to maintain the relationship. In these instances, they cease communication to avoid negative conversation with the other person about how they honestly feel.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s important to note that if someone ghosts you, it says a lot more about their personality than it does about you. They are merely trying to avoid levels of discomfort.

A great strategy is being honest about your boundaries with the other person — regardless of the context.

Be honest. Tell the other person how you feel. Communication will help them to move on with their life so that you can move on with yours.
