GESPONSORDE
At the dawn of the social media era, Belle Gibson became a pioneering wellness influencer - telling the world how she beat cancer with an alternative diet. Her bestselling cookbook and online app provided her success, respect, and a connection to the cancer-battling influencer she admired the most. But a curious journalist with a sick wife began asking questions that even those closest to Belle began to wonder. Was the online star faking her cancer and fooling the world? Kaitlyn Dever stars in the Netflix hit series Apple Cider Vinegar . Inspired by true events, the dramatized story follows Belle’s journey from self-styled wellness thought leader to disgraced con artist. It also explores themes of hope and acceptance - and how far we’ll go to maintain it. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews executive producer Samantha Strauss. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched Apple Cider Vinegar yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts .…

And we're still using them, 121 years later. 1952 - The first transistorized hearing aid was offered for sale by Sonotone Corporation on this day. 1968 –The crew of Apollo 8 entered into orbit around the Moon, becoming the first humans to do so. They performed ten lunar orbits and broadcast live TV pictures. And this week in 1982 - The Man of the Year in "TIME" magazine was a non-human for the first time. A computer received the honors as 1982’s “greatest influence for good or evil.”…
This week in 1938 - Vladimir Zworykin of Wilkinsburg, PA patented the iconoscope television system. 1947 – A group of three physicists invented the transistor. In its original form, the transistor took up a lot of space in the lab in New Jersey where it was invented. Today, thousands of transistors can be packed into a space smaller than a pinhead; and used in every type of electronic device. In 1951 this week - EBR-I (Experimental Breeder Reactor-I) ushered in a new era in nuclear history when it became the first reactor to generate usable amounts of electricity from nuclear energy. It accomplished this feat by lighting four light bulbs at the National Reactor Testing Station in Butte County, Idaho. 1968 – Apollo 8 was launched from the Kennedy Space Center, placing its crew on a lunar trajectory for the first visit to another celestial body by humans. And this week in 1976 - WTCG-TV in Atlanta, Georgia, owned by Ted Turner, changed their call letters to WTBS, and was uplinked via satellite, to become the first commercial TV station to cover the entire U.S. WTBS started on four cable systems, available in 24,000 homes. It is still around today, known simply as TBS.…
This week in 1882 - The Bijou Theatre opened in Boston, MA and became the first theatre to be lighted by electricity. 1903 - The first successful powered airplane flight took place near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. First Orville, then Wilbur Wright kept their invention flying ... each flight lasted just under one minute. 1962 – NASA launched Relay 1. The satellite was developed by RCA and was the first active repeater communications satellite in orbit. Relay 1 was the first satellite to broadcast television from the United States to Japan. 1967 - The French prototype Concorde was rolled out in Toulouse, France. The joint British-French venture and the world’s first supersonic airliner, took two more years of testing and fine-tuning the powerful engines before it made its maiden flight.
