Doomscrolling in bed can ruin a good night of sleep — right? Maybe not, according to recent research that says tech-before-bed may not be as detrimental to slumber as previously thought. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Friday, President Biden repeatedly froze and misspoke during his first — and possibly only — debate against former President Donald Trump, prompting anguish and alarm in the Democratic Party fewer than four months before the general election. Meanwhile, President Biden spoke to reporters following the debate and expressed the belief that he performed well against Trump. Locally, the Big Apple’s public-pool season is already more sink than swim. Mayor Adams declared that 50 public swimming pools are open for the summer, although city officials later clarified the sites will continue to face partial closures because of an ongoing lifeguard shortage. An inmate slipped out of his handcuffs and escaped from police custody at Bellevue Hospital Wednesday as officials prepared to bring him back to Rikers Island, officials and sources said. And in Texas, the former Uvalde schools police chief was indicted over his role in the slow police response to the 2022 massacre at a Texas elementary school that left 19 children and two teachers dead, the local sheriff said.
