The Developments in Belarus

On August 9th, Belarus held presidential elections clearly marked by electoral fraud. Since then, mass protests have gripped Belarus. Numerous allegations of police brutality against the protesters have been recorded, over 10 000 people have been detained and five deaths have been confirmed. Were the persistent protests anticipated before the election? Is a new Belarusian identity being formed? What actions are to be expected from the EU and Russia? Martin Kragh, head of UI’s Russia and Eurasia Programme, held a discussion with Alesia Rudnik, Phd Candidate at Karlstad University and affiliated at the Center for New Ideas, and Katarina Engberg, Senior Associate Fellow at UI, to achieve a greater understanding on the developments in Belarus.
