The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Many people have heard of the cases we are about to talk about, but there’s a couple of important pieces of information that people often get wrong when they talk about them. The first is the belief that a horrific murder of a child under CPS oversight with a detailed history is an anomaly, that’s sadly not the case. Now, many people recognize that the amount of people who tried to help the poor boys we are discussing today are more than you could comfortably fit in the room we're sitting in, as well as the fact that dozens upon dozens of calls were made to the police and to various social services to try to save them. And yes, that does not sound real, but as nightmarish as it sounds, it did happen. This happens more often than you think, this channel is proof of that, and one of the worst parts of doing this is we can only cover the victims that are more than a small blurb in the newspaper. Yes, that’s right. Most murders, even those involving children, end up being nothing more than a small obituary, or a paragraph on a news website. The second thing people often get wrong with this case, is that despite the catastrophic negligence of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Families, the average person believes the spokespeople from LA County who claimed that they would fix every problem in their system and that a case like this would never happen again here. But sadly, it did happen again. It happened at least two more times that we know of. Inside a county that should have known better. A county that openly told us that it knew better. We will talk about those two other times later in the video. This week, Drewby and Yergy head to Winooksi, Vermont, to discuss the case of Peighton Geraw, a toddler who fell through the cracks of DCF. After presenting with unusual bruising, Vermont DCF Investigator John Salter paid a visit to the family home. At that time, little Peighton was possibly already dead, but the Investigator had no clue as he failed to conduct a physical inspection of the little boy. He was just 14 months and 25 days old. According to the autopsy findings, Peighton showed signs of shaken baby syndrome. He had multiple injuries to the top of his head, a forehead injury, neck injuries, damage to the retinal nerves in both eyes, and brain bleeding. He also had a lower leg fracture. His mother, Nytosha Marie Laforce, only served 4 years for his death. After being born to a young mother and an abusive father who was in his 50's (both who were experiencing substance use issues at the time), Dennis and his siblings went to live with his grandmother, Sherry Connor. The problem was, Sherry was also extremely abusive, so Dennis wasn't safe in either environment. On Christmas Eve of 2019, little Dennis was found unresponsive in Sherry's apartment, and it would take years for the grandmother to be brought to justice.
