Episode 4 of the Israel Defense and Diplomacy Forum (IDDF) – with Prof. Chuck Freilich, former Israeli Deputy National Security Advisor, and Danny Ayalon, former Deputy Foreign Minister and ambassador to Washington.
In this podcast, they discuss the primary domestic and national security ramifications of Israel’s upcoming elections, and President Biden’s trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia in mid-July. Both agree that Israel’s ability to address the Iranian, Hezbollah and Hamas threats, as well as the Palestinian and other major issues, will be impaired by the ongoing political crisis. They also agree that the primary focus of Biden’s trip will be Saudi Arabia and the need for heightened oil production, following the war in Ukraine, but that this will be an opportunity for Biden to demonstrate Democratic support for Israel prior to the mid-term elections and to strengthen Lapid in Israel’s elections. Chuck believes that the very future of Israeli democracy may be at stake, due to Netanyahu’s unbridled attempt to remain in office, and that this may be the final election in which a two-state solution remains viable. Danny is far more sanguine and stresses the positive.
