Amy G. Dala is a helpful mnemonic to remember the part of the brain called the amygdala. You may or may not have heard of the amygdala, but if you haven't, it's time to listen to this podcast and do a little studying because trust me - she's in control of your brain - A LOT.
Those times when your partner says something that makes you internally "flip out"? That's your amygdala coming online. Those times when you're in "fight or flight"? Amygdala. Those times when you're so mad that you can't think straight? Amygdala. Those times you say things you eventually regret? Amygdala.
You see, the amygdala is was much more useful for our ancestors. It served them well when they were being chased by wild animals. The problem is that our modern day brains can't tell the difference between a lion chasing us and our partner cheating on us. All it knows is "FEAR" and it reacts.
When your amygdala is online, she's running the show. You can't think from the logical part of your brain and healthy communication can't occur until you've recentered.
