Someone had a great job…….and lost it. Someone loved another person….and they cheated. Someone had the best physician in the world…tell them they have cancer. Someone worried about their kids….and they were safe.

I’ll get to the point – all things have happened before, and in the words of a band I knew in 2006, “and so it will again.” You are not the 1st, only, last, or unique person to run out of gas. The, “this only happens to me,” statements are false because you are assuming you are an individual. What is your answer to this: how would you describe yourself any differently than someone who exists now or who has existed before?

These things…these stocks, trades, houses, cars, feelings, diseases, worries, art works, paint brushes, burnt dinners, shared secrets, negligent homicides, arguments, thefts, hunger pains, skin rashes, bad dreams, regretful moments, weight gains, lost night’s sleep….

Have ALL HAPPENED TO SOMEONE ELSE BEFORE AND IS HAPPENING TO SOMEONE ELSE NOW.

What are you working so hard to protect yourself from? You want to be an honest co-worker and have a stable job foundation, right? Work hard, earn a lot of money………..stress day and night about how a mistake can cost you everything..

Where….in the midst of all that we think is unique…. that we are working so hard to protect, does our uniqueness and happiness lay? Does it all go away when we lose our footing? It’s all been done before. You are not a snowflake; you are cut from the same human dough as all of us. And as Marcus Aurelius once said, “Keep in mind how fast things pass by and are gone. Those that are now, and those to come. Existence flows past us like a river: the “what” is in constant flux, the “why” has a thousand variations. Nothing is stable, not even what’s right here. The infinity of past and future gapes before us, a chasm, who depths we cannot see. So, it would take an idiot to feel self-importance or distress. Or any indignation, either. As if the things that irritate us last.”
