Episode 141, Bethany Hedrick! Bethany was great to have back on the podcast. The last time Bethany and I talked was almost two years ago in my #thebmxinourblood podcast booth during a USABMX Freestyle contest at @woodwardcamp, a contest that Bethany won. She moved on to progress to the point of being asked to join the @gtbmxfreestyle team and also with @odysseybmx and @vans66 supporting Bethany as well, all late last year! We met up at @florideahswampfest a few weeks ago as she was wrapping up a week long trip with @thebloombmx and @gtbmxfreestyle Bethany used her youthful energy to hang out for an hour of rental car air conditioning before heading right back out there to ride more for the cameras of @jeffzphoto and @beabmx Thanks for the time Bethany and congrats on your huge progress! 2:23:09The Fids, 1970-2024 When people said that BMX lost a good one on December 8th, they couldn't have been more right on. As you will hear on this podcast, recorded back in 2019 at Swampfest, Fids was as transparent and hilarious as one could possibly be. He has so many stories and affected so many during his time on earth. Nearly 5,000 people listened to this episode when released. I hope just as many of you all listen this time, maybe with an even closer ear to the recording. I am very humbled by the relationships formed through this podcast so when we lose an icon of our sport/hobby that allowed us to record and hear their story (on any podcast) it can really put you in a retrospective spin. We have lost many and will continue to, that's life. I challenge you all to pick up your phone and record anyone you find interesting. You don't need any kind of special recording set-up, trust me! Having the ability to listen back to these interactions is beyond measure. It could be a friend, family member or someone that you don't yet have a relationship at all! Just do it, don't wait until the opportunity isn't there.…

1:40:00I am truly such a fortunate BMXer and occasional podcaster! I made a last minute decision to head out to Albany, NY to catch a 2nd Nitro Circus show on Thanksgiving Eve before they headed Southwest and South. Because of that choice I was given the tour bus tour by Micah Kranz and met two of the stars of the Nitro Circus tour, Kaden Stone and Brady Baker. Before I knew it we were sitting at the bus table recording episode 153. These two kids were unbelievably polite and welcoming and psyched to do the podcast! As per usual with me and my interviewees, I didn't know much about either of them. And as per usual the conversation was even better because of that, in my opinion. I slowly found out that these modest young adults are decorated Monster Energy athletes that have quite a few accomplishments between them including X Games gold medals and National titles among other achievements. You would have never known it as we got to know each other. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did! Please excuse my interruptions a few times during the podcast, I get a little excited! Thank you Kaden and Brady, you are two very special guys that should be proud of your stories and how you have found your way. Also, a huge thank you to Micah Kranz for allowing me to experience the shows and be a fly on the wall during the pre and post show in Albany while meeting the entire team including the amazing "Wheelz"!…

2:41:52Micah Kranz is such an amazing hype man. He is also a die hard BMX promoter of BMX with intriguing insights into our sport. He had me so motivated to get this episode posted after taking in the Hartford, CT stop of Nitro Circus! We had recorded the interview the day before so when I took in the show I had a completely different set of eyes while watching the show. He truly is the right person for the job and it is absolutely no surprise that he has also announced so many other events, as you will hear in the podcast. The podcast ran a little longer than usual and is worth every minute, no exaggeration at all. Stick with it, go the long way to work, go for a walk, whatever it takes you to get the full story of Micah and so many laughs along the way. Thanks for listening!…

1:55:55Paul Isbester is a great old school friend of mine that I'm fortunate to have in my life after all of these years. This past rainy Sunday we had planned on meeting up for a ride on a new/old Spooky June Bug mountain bike turned gravel bike that Paul found and built up for me. Since the ride had to be canceled, Paul being the ever giving friend, drove to my house to deliver the bike only to be surprised by my devious plan to record a podcast with him. The day was super special due to two podcast call ins, Eric Brownell and Whitey Williams, along with being the beneficiary of an amazing bike build that Paul delivered. I hope you enjoy the podcast as much as I did! Thanks once again to Todd Breau for the podcast announcement artwork! If anyone is interested in joining me at Foothills BMX in Torrington, CT I will be at Foothills on September 7th at 9am for my annual birthday laps followed by birthday road miles, 54 of each. Any money donated that day will go directly to Foothills BMX, a track that is near and dear to me as I am one of the founders of the track/organization. 2:27:19Robbie Miranda was the perfect #thebmxinourblood podcast interview to cap off my quick 36 hour stop in SoCal a couple weeks back. Robbie is a true professional in every sense of the word. He took his sponsorships seriously and absolutely gave each company the best ROI they could possibly have. Instrumental in these sponsorships was Steve Buddendeck of 2B, DK and Verde fame (among others). Having Steve call in and reconnect with Robbie made my heart full! We talk about a bit of everything from the Vans Triple Crown, XGames and his days as an amateur and professional BMX racer. Afterward we got into his transition into his current job as a sheriff where he has worked since his last BMX race over 17 years ago. Enjoy the podcast and take a moment to appreciate Robbie for his service. 1:48:54I have a pretty cool podcast for you all this week! It came up as an impromptu opportunity that made for a recording that surprised me and Chris Moeller of S&M/Fit Bikes. My intention was to say hello and drop off two letters that Chris had written back to me in January 1988 in response to my requests to buy an S&M Mad Dog frame (a brand new company at the time) and to invite Chris to a trail jam at the Sunnyside trails in Connecticut. We also talked zines since Chris was putting out the Soul Zine at the time. What we ended up recording was a full hard goods production tour that was so interesting! Chris's passion for the shop and creating product is amazing. We finished the tour off with Chris reading the letters he wrote to me in 1988. It was a trip down memory lane for both of us! Just a couple of 17 year olds in love with BMX and dirt jumping along with side hustle passion projects to support our mutual hobby. Enjoy the podcast and look forward to two more from that day, Jerry Bagley and Robbie Miranda! Special thanks to Sean from Vans for providing a home base for me for my quick visit! Lastly, thank you to my son Joe Jr for letting me tag along for the cross country truck camper trip to his winter job way up at June Lake in the Sierras of California. If not for his adventures none of this would have happened. Love you Joey! If you would like to support the podcast please consider a monetary donation of any amount through my PayPal or Venmo. 1:47:49It's been a while since the last The BMX In Our Blood episode but as it goes, timing is everything. I am forever grateful to have been asked by Base Brooklyn (Enos Colombo) to be a part of what became more than a bike show, reunion and tribute to Eddie Rios at the Coney Island Brewery on Sunday October 22nd. Unbeknownst to him the event WAS Eddie Rios and it was truly amazing. Eddie has been a staple of the freestyle BMX community back to his days ruling Mullaly in the 80's, 90's and beyond. Everything I learned about Eddie through the mini interviews and conversations off the record were absolutely a testament to the love the NYC BMX community has for Eddie and Eddie's incredible personality. Although Eddie's time with us is limited he will have an impact on all of us for the rest of our lives. There was one sentence in Eddie's speech that was so emotional and so incredibly impactful in such a positive way, "I'll miss you guys but I'll see you." Listen closely and think about it as you look at the photo used for this podcast announcement (by Norman Blake) as Eddie raises his arms as the King of New York, one more time. Here are the interviews in the order of the episode: Enos Colombo Roy de Guzman Nito Brett Irrgang Eddie Haller Mike Ick Jimmy Mac Glenn Milligan Richie Poole Eddie Rios Ralph Sinisi Edwin DeLaRosa Bob Scerbo Tyrone Williams Robbie Morales George Gallo with Eddie Rios Until next time....…

Ryan's role at Sparky's Distribution is pretty cool between his team managing to marketing and quite a few other roles he and others at Sparky's join in on. Interacting with Ryan was nothing but fun and interesting, I was a little jealous when I left there! Imagine a group of people that are all in a workplace for the right reasons and having fun doing it. The staff was also super welcoming, I really appreciated that! We didn't just cover all of his amazing video parts from Anthem II to Who Brought The Dicks or his long term sponsor @profile_racing We covered some real life issues of anxiety and depression that is pretty familiar to so many, myself included. There was a time earlier on in the podcast that Eric was on my list but I just couldn't find him. Seems that Eric has been slow to the social media party and I couldn't agree with him more with his timing! In this episode Eric tells us where he has been and wow is it interesting and impressive. 1:22:30Nina Buitrago rules! Not much else to say, you just have to listen to Nina's stories of living and taking chances in every part of her life. We talked about her many adventures, her career, the Olympics and her continued support of the women's BMX scene. I could interview Nina each year and come out of it charged up and educated on living the best life. If you can't get enough of Nina you can look back in The BMX In Our Blood archives to Ep 17 for my 1st introduction to Nina and the uphill climb she made to crowd favorite status. I really lucked out with a few awesome guys and an amazing woman for The BMX In Our Blood podcast this weekend at the Welcome Jam at The Wheel Mill. Jamie Thayer was one of them, and what a pleasant surprise he was! Big thanks to Ronnie Bonner for connecting me with Jamie and Gage Sharp (in a future episode this month). Jamie was great....and ended up winning a good handful of cash courtesy of the Welcome Jam at The Wheel Mill. In this interview you will hear Jamie's brother Dylan also. Dylan is an amazing videographer (and rider) that creates amazing edits. The Shadow Riding Gear edit he put out was awesome, check it out when you have a few minutes. Another thanks to Noah McBride of The Scenes Not Dead. I met Noah just before we started recording and he sat in and helped with come questions, it worked out great! Anyhow, congrats to Jamie for the new sponsorship with Shadow Riding Gear and getting hooked up with Subrosa too! The thumbnail picture for the podcast image is by Shaun Jordan.…

2:00:59Episode 127 is all about giving back and Carley Young exemplifies giving back more than most anyone I know. This podcast interview was recorded during Women's Weekend at Ray's MTB Park in Cleveland Ohio. A busy weekend to say the least! Carley and Nina Buitrago killed it. Ray's was packed all weekend long with women supporting other women while learning through clinics put on by Carley and Nina. It is important to note that Women rode for free at Ray's for the entire 3 day weekend! As you will hear, Carley instructs skills clinics all over as well as putting on Ride Like A Girl clinics as well. AND there is a Ride Like A Girl BMX racing team. Watch for the next Ride Like A Girl weekend at The Wheel Mill in Pittsburgh on March 26th and 27th. Don't miss it! As always, a big thank you to Powers BMX shop and museum for sponsoring the podcast. Please consider ordering from Powers for all of your BMX needs as well as a trip through the history of BMX by checking out the Powers collection. 1:41:57Here you go, Part 2 of the Darren Meenan interview with The BMX In Our Blood (@thebmxinourblood)! A lot of conversation about Darren's business, The 7 Line and motocross racing. Darren is absolutely determined to succeed when taking on a challenge and these two topics are no exception. Apparently Darren has taken on the challenge of winning our Supercross Fantasy league as well because since this recording he has held on to the red plate with a slight lead over Keith Terra (@k_terra) after week 3 of the series. 1:37:52If you don't know Darren Meenan you will know him well after this 2 part episode. Darren is one of those types of people that when thrown a challenge or taking one on by his own drive, he works at it until the goal is reached. The 7 Line in particular is such an amazing story that I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't witness it myself at his office/warehouse on Long Island during this recording. Originally from Queens, Darren spent plenty of his youth as a NY Mets fan. When it came time to make some money Darren showed his true Long Island hustle that has become a common story with many of my interviews with the BMXers from the area. That hustle landed him a unique Mets licensing deal for NY Mets merchandise. There is so much more to the story and it is all in Part 1 and Part 2 of Episode 126 of The BMX In Our Blood. BMX and Motocross are huge in Darren's story and are exactly what I was looking for. Darren puts it all together explaining how BMX started it all for him and how if not for BMX he wouldn't be where he is today because of Manmade BMX and BMX in general. So enjoy Part 1 and be ready for Part 2 toward the end of this week. Thank you all for listening and have a great week! 1:43:01Josh Guyer of DWA4130 is one modest dude! Josh and I were able to meet up at the recent Oakwoods Chili Jam in Massachusetts last Saturday. It is a pretty relaxed conversation with a guy that is juggling more than most and you would never know it. One of the balls in the air of this juggling act is raising money to give back to the trails and the riders. It is pretty impressive as Josh does this from his home in Minnesota when not on road trips to New England, Pennsylvania, Texas or New York or working as a union electrician. It was just a great conversation with a really impressive rider that loves the BMX trail scene. Thank you Oakwoods crew for giving me the place to record and an awesome day of riding! 1:50:54Episode #121 - Shannon Gillette, what an interesting conversation with a guy that clearly knows his way around the United States because of his childhood as a military brat and BMX. If I remember correctly from this interview, Shannon has been with USABMX for about 25 years after starting as a CDL driver for them and worked his way right up the ladder to marketing. It was really nice to give Shannon a platform to talk about whatever he wanted to. My personal goal was to get to know Shannon and talk about his experience with BMX to kind of...qualify him to be one of our stewards of our beloved sport. Pretty ridiculous, right? I think many of us actually do that and we certainly talked about exactly that. It turns out Shannon, as you will hear, has been involved in some way with BMX for 40 years or so. Flip through the pictures on my post for this episode on IG to see what I'm talking about, Gromdad2000. He goes way further back than I had ever thought and he is beyond modest about that! So feel confident that Shannon, as well as many others in the USABMX office, have the experience to keep BMX moving forward with our interests in mind. 1:56:00The Woodward East stop of the USABMX Freestyle series was amazing! Aside from Woodward being the best BMX playground in the world they had the perfect setup for the contest. All the way from lodging to a huge variety BMX terrain to ride, Woodward does it right. When you add the incredible staff of USABMX Freestyle to the mix you end up with a perfectly run event with great judging, efficient schedules and super happy amateur riders. What was really cool was that USBMX was able to include a UCI contest on the last day of the event giving our Olympic hopefuls some competition for the first time since before the Covid pandemic and before the next UCI event in France. I was really impressed that these Elite athletes watched all of the amateur classes and cheered them on and took photos with the finalists and anyone else interested. Like racing, freestyle Elite professionals are so accessible, that is something we should tap into as often as possible. In this podcast you will hear riders of all ages and skill talk about their Woodward USABMX Freestyle experience, including @themajorbmx What a pleasant surprise Marshall was! I would like to offer most sincere thanks to the staff at Woodward and the everyone at USABMX, Tony D, Shane Fernandez, John David, Shannon Gillette (podcast with Shannon coming up)Travis and many others that were working both the freestyle event and the Gold Cup BMX race at the same facility. 1:19:25This episode has a couple things going on. Most importantly I was able to interview Rich Vatalaro, one of the most dedicated volunteers I have had the fortune to work with at the annual fundraisers that I put on. Rich is such selfless person that just loves to have a good time and help the cause each year. In addition to that Rich is a blast to ride with as we gently age. The other focus of the podcast is to talk a bit about this year’s Road2Recovery Jam at the Trumbull BMX Track in Trumbull, CT on July 25th. It was great to get some feedback from Rich on some events he would like to see and the events he loves to see year after year. I would like ask each of you that have the ability to donate, please do so! We are always looking for raffle items and silent auction memorabilia or larger items. They do not have to be BMX related. On the auction side of things I should tell you that even though you may think it isn’t of value to the fundraiser (last year’s Taj T1 frame blueprint and the Brian Foster Fit complete 22” come to mind) they are incredible fundraising items that really help Road2Recovery out. As Ground Chuck says, the object isn’t to get a deal, it is to bid more than what the item may be worth. So plan on lots of fun with so much to do at the event…and meet Mike Aitken! While you are at it please say hello to Rich Vatalaro and thank him for his hard work at making the event successful. A big thank you Powers BMX shop for continuing to sponsor the podcast and helping ease the costs that go along with it. Be safe everyone and enjoy the interview with Sir Richard Vatalaro! 1:55:45I first met Kevin Robinson Jr. at the Find Your Fight Jam in 2018. The night before that jam Kevin and I were working on a Hoffman bike that Mat Hoffman had sent Kevin to start riding a level up on. Three short years later KRobJr is riding competitively all around the Country and riding for Ron Bonner and Subrosa! It is absolutely crazy how fast Kevin has progressed. His 1st flair was around a year into riding. Just amazing. Kevin Sr. is watching from above and clearly so proud of what an amazing young man Kevin has become, just as much off the bike as well. Huge huge huge shoutout to his mom, Robin Robinson, and his Uncle Kenny Robinson among others that have helped bring Kevin to the level he is at with so much love and support. Something that I would love to have all of the listeners pay close attention to is the move USABMX Freestyle has made to create a competition platform for amateurs that is helping riders like Kevin have a goal in competition and a pathway (as you will hear) to the Olympics if they so desire. That was not happening previously. I am so impressed by the hard work of Tony Degollado, Shannon Gillette and the staff at USABMX for making the series happen. 1:03:40Most of what I do in life are spontaneous yet thoughtful moves, this interview with Jane is one of them. I first zoned in on Jane McCarthy's work as an RN during the pandemic when I read a few of her Facebook posts that were, we'll say, written under extreme stress during the late winter/early spring of the rapid onset of Covid. She was accurate in her reasoning and frustrated at the lack of concern. At that time it was more of a light hearted joke relating the virus to Corona beer. Honestly, even those little things contributed to more complacency, in my opinion. I have known Jane and her family for a few years now as we end up at a lot of the same events and their volunteering at mine. Listening to Jane tell her story can be heartbreaking at times. If you are like me in any way you may have been suspect during the early onset of Covid...it only hurts the weak and old, it's no worse than the flu, etc. I feel like an idiot after listening to Jane tell her story of working huge hours and trying to protect her husband and children from her Covid exposure at her job at the hospital. If you take just one thing from this podcast let it be this, if you don't think the threat is real, think about the others in your life. It is far bigger than you. The preventive measures required are the least you can do for your fellow humans in this crazy world we live in. So mask up, clean up and stop the spread...for others, not just you.…

2:17:26Part 2 of the Tim Strelecki podcast! I hope you have listened to Part 1 before Part 2 but there is really no wrong direction when listening to Tim Strelecki talk! This entire podcast is amazing but the take away is absolutely toward the end of the interview. Tim mean what he says and we should all pause to ponder what this message may mean to you as a friend of someone that needs an ear to listen or someone have a difficult time with addiction. We all have something. We also have the ability to help ourselves and others. Pick up that phone. Answer that call. You just never know. Thank you Tim and Darcy Strelecki for the hospitality and visit. It may have been the longest and fastest trip for #thebmxinourblood but I have had a hunch for a while that this interview had to happen for so many reasons. I hope you are as grateful as I am that Tim was able to share his story. Send him the love and appreciation he deserves for being as strong as he is. There is only one Tim Strelecki and we are so fortunate to have him with us. Thank you Tim, for everything you are and will always be. Thank you Powers Bike Shop for continuing to sponsor the show along with Old Bones Therapy the co-sponsor. You can find these great people at: powersbmx.com powersbmxmuseum.com oldbonestherapy.com Don't forget the Ride For Recovery fundraiser at the Trumbull BMX Track on July 26th, just two weeks away! 2:33:49Part 1 of possibly the most amazing subject I have had the opportunity to interview for #thebmxinourblood This is only Part 1 and I'm so grateful that this happened. I lost count of the National and World Championship #1's that Tim accomplished but it is somewhere around 9. Most racers are fortunate to be in the top 10 once nationally let alone world #1. Listeners may not know but I'm a huge fan of world tour road cycling and happy to fight to get my lycra cycling kit on for a ride so talking with Tim about his transformation into endurance cycling and racing is awesome. One of the highlights of the episode is the Danny Bailey call in. If you don't get choked up you may want to check your pulse or your moral compass. It is nothing short of completely a part of BMX history that will always be remembered. Stay tuned for Part 2 where Tim really dives into substance abuse and transforming himself into a road and cyclocross phenom. Oh yeah, I should probably mention that his sister Jen is married to some guy named Brian Foster. Thank you Jen for the perfect intro. As always, thank you Powers Bike Shop, Powers BMX Museum and Powers Pre-owned for supporting the show. Also, thank you to Old Bones Therapy for assisting my body in keeping those runs and rides in along with some BMX in between! Check out both companies. They are both passionate about BMX and I thank them for that! Lastly, the Road2Recovery Jam is back on!!! Follow my IG handle @gromdad2000 for info on that. I'm looking for auction items and raffle goods as soon as possible, it is only 3 weeks away on July 26th at the Trumbull BMX Track in Connecticut. Any help is appreciated!…

3:11:22Switching things up a bit with Episode 103 and getting back to a BMX racer. There is none better than Shawn Diprete from Massachusetts. Listening to Shawn describe his focus and intensity is pretty amazing. Some pretty important lessons in here for the younger generations as Shawn talks about the importance of staying out of trouble during those important years of development, the teens and early 20's. Shawn doesn't sugar coat the effect of his actions and how they came to be. The amazing part of Shawn's story is that he was able to put that energy into winning BMX titles, the most important being the 2013 USABMX National #1 Cruiser title. That means he had the most points with all age groups combined. There is only one winner each year and in the Northeast he has the only #1 title ever awarded. I loved that Shawn is searching for the fun in riding bikes after 4 decades of competitive BMX racing. He still loves racing but wants to let that competitive focus ease up a bit and learn how to have fun again. I'm pretty sure Jason Carnes' Berm Academy tour was a catalyst for this thought process as they toured around riding DJ and BMX bikes. Until next time, be safe and have fun! 2:04:37As much as we joke around on this episode about the amount of free time Jonny Nemecek has to ride, Jonny is way more than that and I'm sure his friends know that. Now you can learn how hard Jonny works to live his life his way after 50-60 hours of work each week as a multi County licensed Master Electrician. Not so coincidentally enough I was waiting last Saturday for Jonny to get home from work to record his podcast. I always have a list of interviews I would like to do and many of my decisions are based on what I'm feeling at the time. I was feeling like Iearning about the personal life of Jonny and wanted to hear about work, friends, family and future. His situation is far more intense than I expected due to a heavy job in electrical contracting. Yet he still makes the time to ride when most of us wouldn't. And ride at a high level as well! It was really nice to see my BMX daughter Joce Camarra in her new digs at Jonny's house as well and of course Rito! Soon to be a true BMX house with trails included. 3:52:11This has to be one of my favorite episodes! I know it is longer than usual at 3 hours and 40 something minutes but you have plenty of time to listen as I won't be getting out to record again until Coronagedon blows over. Tom Bivona is a really special mid-school Long Island trail and race guy with the best laugh I've heard since I started recording 2-1/2 years ago. Well actually, Danny Bailey is another fantastic laugher. Gratefulness. Such a simple word but not expressed often enough. The highs and lows Tom has been through would make most lose their laugh and their gratefulness, not Janice or Tom Bivona though. I'm a very grateful guy but not even in the same ballpark as Tom. Please do yourself a favor, immerse yourself in this one and appreciate Tom's journey thus far. In the meantime, please stay clean and safe everyone. It's very difficult to find solid footing during this slippery slope of cautiousness and panic. On the BMX side, please do your best to get down to Swampfest for the postpone date of May 23rd. Trey Jones and his crew have worked so hard on this and could use a huge crowd as a thank you for their hard work. Also, I am announcing our Jam officially tomorrow. It will be on July 26th at the Trumbull, CT track with some wild events. The beneficiary will be Road2Recovery as their need is great as much now than ever. More on that later. Jocelyn (@joc313 on IG) is absolutely a different animal. Never before I have seen this type of progression while skipping the traditional steps of learning how to ride BMX racing, trails, park, etc. We jumped into some heavier questions and her opinion of how women as well as men (very much so myself) have learned that there is no perfect method of excelling in such a challenging hobby. Steve Crandall did an amazing job keeping everyone stoked throughout the day and a big reason as to why good things happen if you want them to. All of this fun was accomplished with no admission, no rules and no frowns. Huge thanks again to Chad of Powers Bike Shop for making this even happen on the logistics side and the event side. You won't hear quite as much about the actual event in this BUT you will hear from many positive people from Richmond that help make this happen. From outside of Richmond there were also many like minded BMXers like myself that are part of the event and focused solely on the success of the event. Not sure who won the vert wall Ginch lasagna prize or any other contest throughout the day on the craziest and sketchiest ramps and safe to say that everyone riding and spectating had a great time! One of the major accomplishments of the jam was the kicking off of the Rad Share non-profit venture, if you want to make a difference look this organization up and help any way you can. 2:32:58One of the many cool things that happen when you go to the XGames is that you meet good people from around the USA as well as the world. I went to the XGames a couple months ago with no intentions of recording anyone, I just wanted to take it in and understand how this made for TV insanity really works. I first met Zach minutes before BMX vert and the connection was made and I became more aware of the 1/2 pipe heavy hitters. Fast forward a few months and he we are, story recorded. Crazy how it worked out that Zach Newman was in the middle of an 8 week school show schedule and was passing through while doing shows in Connecticut while calling Northern Kentucky home. I'm really happy that Zach let me know he was around, the timing was perfect for a podcast interview. He was just looking to say hi while coming through but I always have the equipment ready to record because you just never know! Anyone that rides 14' half pipes, as well as anything else he or she can find, has a mind and body full of courage, determination and persistence. Persistence is a word that Zach knows well, especially with his passion for riding and competing in 1/2 pipe competitions. Mainly the Xgames. Enjoy the conversation, Zach has great stories valuable lessons of persistence that everyone can benefit from. Also, thank you for continuing to follow along my journey of podcasting as I start my 3rd year thanks to all of you out there in BMX land! I've had a gut feeling about Adem for some time since meeting him at the Wheel Mill during the 2nd stop of the Uncovered BMX indoor park series in Pittsburgh, PA a little over a year ago. I'm a huge proponent of using those first years of being an adult to figure out what you want out of life. It's tough! It is easier when you don't conform too early. Everybody is different but I believe that taking chances and really exploring life's options is huge. So many people learn this unintentionally through any of the BMX disciplines because of the experiences BMX can take you on. It's an adventure that truly makes the journey complete. Listen closely as Adem describes his trip through his early 20's so far. I'm certainly the watered down version of Lori (quote stolen from Garrett Byrnes) and love to hear how and what other individuals and non-profits are doing on a larger scale. So for this unique podcast, that coincided with our #road2recoverjam on July 21st, I broke the #thebmxinourblood interview into a before and after. The weather..it was like hovering over hell wrapped in aluminum foil with the heat and humidity but we all did it! Even the campers and the outdoor movie attendees had a great time on Saturday night. It was truly the most fun to interview Lori on Saturday (pre-jam) and then post jam to get a gut read on how Lori and Road2recovery felt about the event. He also has a kind soul that, as you will hear, recognizes the potential of kids that are just getting into BMX and encourages them the best he can. What I most like about Aaron is his determination to travel and experience everything he can by living in a minimalistic way. So chances are pretty good you have met Aaron around the US if not overseas, if you haven't, look him up! Always a pleasure to see you Aaron, keep it going. 3:15:32The Wheel Mill has been around for what seems like years and years with the amount of work that you see in every room of this Pittsburgh indoor bike park mecca. I've conducted so many interviews in various spots within the building with the most amazing people as they rolled through town. Gary Young, Brian Kachinsky, Mike and Mark Potoczny, Tom Dugan, Mike Cottle, Nina Buitrago, Sean Methven, Trey Jones, Isaac McCrea, Chris Doyle and the kids of the past two Next Generation Jams. I've also been fortunate to interview The Halahan's, Mason Ritter, Murphy Moschetta and Eric "Zoo" Miller outside of The Mill although they are each a big part of the park. This time I had the fortune to talk with the key people of The Wheel Mill, Harry Geyer and Mike Potoczny. As you will hear, these guys are passionate about their job and compliment each other so well. The Wheel Mill just celebrated their 6th year of public use but what many don't know is how much farther back Harry's passion for the park goes. Listen all at once or in chunks but don't skip through, there are lessons after lessons and then there are actual lessons! It's no wonder Hoffman Bikes chose him to be on the team a few years ago. What a great choice and one that seems to fit right in with the rest of the team. This podcast is a little different than any others I have recorded because during the course of the podcast Mason gave me my first tattoo while answering questions, not an easy task! Freehand too! If you don't follow me on IG at @gromdad2000 I'll let you know right here. The tattoo is a phrase, Make A Difference. It is very meaningful to me for reasons that I listeners may understand. One of my favorite events of the year, the Next Generation Jam. This was the 6th annual NGJ and it was awesome. Not only did the Halahans, the Wheel Mill crew and the Potocznys put on another great event and the sponsors were awesome. I have to imagine that each 16 and under rider went home with something. On the sponsor level, Subrosa and Shadow were represented by the man himself, Ronnie Bonner! His involvement and concept are talked about in this podcast and it is cool! Vans also sponsored big along with G-Form as the other title sponsors as well as Jaunt, Kink, FBM, Square One, Joyride 150, S&M, Profile, Inkdivision, QBP, Woodward, Fit, Morpheus, One Feather Press, Pro Bike Run, Over The Bar cafe, and Cinema. 2:24:33The Fids. I think that some of us get to the point in life that we start live the way we want to, not the way we are told to by our peers and society. That point in life for Fids came early on. At the age of 11 he was already going where he wanted to with BMX and skating. Through elaborate schemes and lack of technology in the Mama Fids household, Fids found a way. As I took the trip down the Fids memory lane I heard so much of him taking on challenges that most wouldn't. The Nitro Circus mega ramp show came to England last year when Fids was almost 49 and he sweet talked his way on to the 63 step climb to the top and let go. If you haven't seen the video go to @thefids on IG and find it. Not only did he session it for 20 minutes but the Nitro crew asked him to be part of the show! This is much of how Fids has lived his life. The podcast starts off with a few minutes of Leland Thurman, Fids best friend in the U.S., because I just had to know about the tattoos each of them have of each other on their ass cheeks. It's a site to behold. The podcast was recorded at Swamp Fest last weekend and was worth every minute. You can find Fids at The Source at night giving lessons or anytime on IG and Leland @shitluck on IG. Enjoy and don't hold in the laughter, it's just too good to be true and it is very true! Warning, there is quite a bit of explicit language and talk so listen closely to the John Lee recorded disclaimer and proceed with caution and love every minute of it.…

1:39:36Totally mixed emotions while working up the Colby Benoit podcast. Psyched that I can shine some light on Colby and his #rideeverything mindset. Colby has ridden BMX plenty over his 25 years and does all disciplines really well. I'll never forget him landing a 180 rollback on the last set during the jumping contest my annual fundraising Find Your Fight jam at Powder Ridge in CT. He later blew my mind watching him kill it at the DIY World Champs at Powers Bike Shop in Virginia. He ended up with the gold brick (cinderblock). It's guys like Colby that give me hope for the future of BMX in Connecticut. Here is the downer. I spend a lot of time driving, vacation time, prepping questions, editing, etc. This is all my choice and I almost always love it or at least learn from the experience. In a recent interview I decided to help a someone out and guide him through an interview in an effort to help him get out of a jam. You know, a 2nd chance. In doing that I lead people to believe I agree with this person's actions and decisions. Not the case at all. I simply believe the situation wasn't and still hasn't been dealt with by our sport's only sanctioning body. That is wrong and no one should be left in the dark in these situations. As far as the person, it took less than a week for him to blow up on me and say "Ur the problem with BMX my man" among other things but that one really stung. So basically, I don't care for drama in any sense of the word or someone that sets a poor example for the kids. I'm just going to continue to interview people with the PMA and fundraise my ass off for those that need it most each year. The 5th annual jam is on July 20th and 21st at the Powder Ridge Park in Middlefield, CT and will benefit Road2Recovery. Don't miss it! Together we have raised over $70,000 over the past 4 years. 2:17:48Vic Behm, wow. If there is one personality that I have interviewed that is ridicuosly skilled on the bike, brash to the BMX establishment and extremely confident, it's Vic Behm. He has definitely made his mark on BMX, like it or not. I say this because he isn't trying to be part of the BMX establishment. He is showing us how non-conforming you can be and still be part of competition. Anyone that has been in BMX for a bit remembers some of the most entertaining non-conformers (Chris Moeller, Dave Clymer, Terry Tenette, etc.) You may notice during the podcast that the one thing that I just don't understand is how USABMX can suspend someone without explanation and a time frame before Vic can race again. If it were me, I would lawyer up ASAP. I want to be clear here, I'm not condoning Vic's actions or any of the actions by the parties involved. Somewhere in-between is the truth. What I'm simply saying is that USABMX should explain why and how long the suspension is for. Pretty simple, unless you don't have a clear case along with witnesses and a police report. Whether you approve of Vic's actions or not, this is no way to handle the situation. Cult, Vic's sponsor, is as anxious for a ruling as Vic is. While they wait they lose opportunities to promote their BMX racing division. At the root of this Cult is a business and USABMX should never suspend without a process that includes all of the necessary information needed to satisfy everyone involved. I'm fully aware that there are two sides to every story, the details are of no interest to me. It's not my battle. Just give Vic and Cult the respect of a ruling so they can decide what to do from there. As always, that you Powers Bike Shop for sponsoring the show and a huge that you all for the IG DM's that make all of this worthwhile. 1:50:38Episode #52! One full year of weekly podcasts complete, hard to believe. Couldn't be happier to have Jamie Cooper-Ellis as my closer for the 1 year anniversary podcast. He represents the exact reason of why I started the podcast, to highlight East Coast riders and give them as much exposure as possible. Jamie is no secret to the BMX world but the story he tells of farm life and how he overcomes the geographical challenges of being a successful rider living in the Northeast is pretty amazing. As always support those who support the sport and the riders. Jamie is on flow from Haro and NE Bad Boys so we know he doesn't really need the money! 2:15:06Episode #51! One more until our podcast 1 year birthday. When I 1st picked up on Satoski Enda I was so impressed with his dedication to BMX trail riding and building. I have been waiting until his annual trip to Catty Woods and Posh Trails so I could interview the original Trails Warrior. It was worth the wait because in the meantime he won the Ride BMX NORA Cup Trail Rider of the year just a few weeks ago! Very deserving candidate and grateful winner. Special thanks to @danruhe for opening your home to me for the podcast recording and supplying the IPA that mysteriously kept being replaced as each one was emptied. I think a certain Japanese friend of Satoski's was showing the respect that is part of Japanese tradition. Can't beat that but it might beat you! Thank you Satoski (@trailswarrior on IG) for giving the podcast a go even though you were concerned about the language barrier, you did awesome! As you will hear on the podcast I presented a repurposed NBL Christmas Classic trophy with a "Trail Rider of the Year" name plate on it that I presented to Satoski with a Japanese bow that was deep enough to make him an Emperor. If you want to see the award and the comical presentation look for the pics on my IG, @gromdad2000 Once again, thank you to @powersbikeshop for sponsoring the show. Be sure to follow the instructions at the beginning of the podcast to win a new seat compliments of Powers Bike Shop in honor of Satoski's legendary duct taped decade old throne that he has no intentions of replacing. For this occasion @nuno_oliveira (of Odyssey) did a special podcast announcement using gold to honor the 50th episode, I am truly honored that Nuno has helped with the podcast graphics as well as @brianiarocci with the www.thebmxinourblood.com website! Anyway, 2 more episodes and I'll have 52 weeks straight of interviews! So back to Van, he has been so passionate, diverse and talented for years. And he just won the BMX Legend NORA Cup! In this episode Van talks about his big move to Japan for the next two years to work for Tokyo 2020 in preparation for BMX in the Olympics. What a great choice. Van continues to kill it on the bike at 38 years old and works as a judge at UCI and other events around the world. We also talk about the success of the Uncovered BMX series this past winter with @bkachinsky For these reasons and more I believe Van will do an awesome job helping steer the ship for Olympic Freestyle and ultimately get more kids on bikes due to the huge Olympic exposure. Wish Van all the best as he takes on this job that gives him a great opportunity to use his experience with BMX to do the best he can. With over 25 years in the sport, I'm sure Van will do a great job. I hadn't been to the Posh High Air Contests and didn't want to miss this year! Glad I didn't! The low key Ever Peacock hit the high notes on his way to winning BOTH high air and best whip! As you will hear, they wouldn't have it any other way. Don't say the words, "I can't do it" in front in front of Kenny. He give you 101 great reasons why "you can". This year the #findyourfightjam for the family of Kevin Robinson will very likely eclipse the past jams. Another big reason is the BMX community joining the MTB community at Powder Ridge Park, the home of a new Dirt Sculpt rebuild that is drawing so many riders to try out the new terrain. The 5th annual Next Generation Jam was held yesterday (April 7th) at The Wheel Mill in Pittsburgh and it was awesome. Over 200 kids under the age of 16 showed up to compete for fun in a no pressure atmosphere as created by the Next Generation Jam volunteers and The Wheel Mill. The amount of donations from the BMX industry and well as local businesses made for a win win situation for any Next Generation rider that participated in any way. Not one kid went home empty handed! I was fortunate to be a sponsor of the event by supplying the award plates for each event (as designed by TJL Photo) and decided to interview boys and girls through the day to get their opinion on the jam. You will also hear from a Wheel Mill local, Jonathan Starks (a paraplegic wheelchair and motorcycle stuntman) as well as event organizer Mike Halahan. Congratulations to everyone who participated and helped make the event happen! Watch for pictures on the Next Generation Jam Instagram as they become available.…

2:15:40Sometimes you meet people in BMX that are so crazy on the bike and off that you can only assume how the conversation is going to go and just hold on tight. As Gary Young said, Tom (or Tommy as the girls say) is a free spirit. He ended up being so awesome to talk to. As it usually goes, the guest figures that 30-45 minutes is the limit for what they have to talk that may be interesting. I've never had that problem with this podcast and Tom was a believer when two hours flew by. It was super cool to have Gary Young surprise us by joining in as well! Anyway, Tom is a solid guy with amazing skills and no fear. So good to watch! Look for Tom on June 9th when the XGames Real BMX show airs on ABC. It is produced by Stew Johnson and judged by podcast guests Scotty Cranmer and Trey Jones (coming up next) while hosted by another past podcast guest, Chris Doyle! Pretty cool, can't wait! 2:27:36Ok, I'm a little biased but for good reason. Robbie "Robo" Morales is the real deal. Has he been perfect? Admittedly, no. Who really is? Robbie openly talks about exactly this in the interview. What Robbie has been is an accomplished trail rider, racer, street rider, marketer, company owner and dedicated sponsor to his riders over the years. Having grown up around Robbie I have seen the sincere, the passionate, the obnoxious, the skilled, the fun loving...the everything that makes Robbie who he is today. Everyone learns as they go and Robbie has learned more than most of us in BMX, sometimes the hard way. Bottom line, I want people to get to know the Robbie I know. A mature man that owns everything he has done, perfect and not. I loved taking this interview on and digging into the mind of a passionate BMX lifer that has much left to give. I hope you feel the same by the end of the listen.
