It is an extremely challenging demand for philosophers and scientists alike, but is this even a legitimate question in the first place? Can it be answered and if so how and what is the role and distinction between necessity and probability? Anthony Aguirre is a Professor of Physics at The University of California at Santa Cruz. He received his Ph.D. in Astronomy in 2000 from Harvard University and spent three years as a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University. Aguirre has worked on a wide variety of topics in theoretical cosmology, ranging from intergalactic dust to galaxy formation to gravity physics to the large-scale structure of inflationary universes and the arrow of time.
