American politics has always been a fascinating subject for TV and film viewers, from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington to All the President’s Men to Lincoln. And it was 25 years ago that The West Wing premiered on NBC, featuring creator/writer Aaron Sorkin’s highly stylized portrayal of the White House at work, with the focus originally not on the President himself, but on the staffers that keep the presidency functioning. (Originally, Martin Sheen’s character, President Josiah Bartlet, was meant to be a recurring character, but he proved to be so popular that the role was expanded to that of a series regular.) In any administration, the most important staffer is usually the Chief of Staff, who works directly with both the President and his top aides, making sure that policies and instructions are being followed correctly. It’s a crucial job, and on The West Wing, that role was filled by the late John Spencer, who played Leo McGarry. When Spencer was hired for the job, he once told us, Sorkin gave him a little bit of homework to help him understand the Chief of Staff’s function more clearly.
