The 2022 Matthew Simpson Lecture in Religion was an in-person event at Simpson for the first time since 2019, and Dartmouth's Randall Balmer came to speak on the origins of the rise of the Religious Right as a political force in America. Balmer argues that it wasn't abortion that provided the issue that galvanized evangelical leaders, but rather their desire to protect segregated private religious schools.
