Welcome to today's episode of Queerly Popular. Today, we are talking about The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. They came out in 2001 and 2004 and starred Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. The movies are about Mia Thermopolis, a 15-year old San Franciscan, who finds out she is the princess of a small European country called Genovia. The movies are based off of characters from a series of books by Meg Cabot (which I haven't read).

After going through the plot (relatively briefly), I talk about a couple of issues I have with the movies, although both are more with the way people at the time (and to a certain extent now) do things than the movies themselves. I also talk about why I consider Mia's story to be a trans story and read a post I wrote about the topic.

Here are some fun scenes from the movies:

Princess Diaries

Mia's Makeover (I hate that this is done, but the scene is fun)

Mia's First Dinner Party

Mia's Speech Accepting Being a Princess (her "coming out" so to speak)

Princess Diaries 2

Julie Andrews and Raven-Symone sing

Mia Has Orphans Join Her in the Parade

Some Wedding Looks

Mia Looking at Potential Suitors

Mia's Coronation

Our next episode, on September 26, will be about the movie The Curiousity of Chance.
