If someone asked you to close your eyes and picture Raleigh, there's a pretty good chance Thomas Sayre will be involved in the image your mind conjures up. Maybe it's the Shimmer Wall on the back of the Raleigh Convention Center. Perhaps Gyre (read: the rings) out at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Possibly one the countless buildings his firm Clearscapes has designed.
We linked up with Sayre recently to discuss his life and work and ended up with over two hours of rich conversation, so we've divided into a two-part episode. In Part 1 we discuss Sayre's relationship with architect Steve Schuster, some of the stories behind their early and more recent projects around Raleigh, and the decision to set up a studio and live (and now leave!) in downtown Raleigh.
