Keith Kellogg, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for special envoy for the war in Ukraine, said Wednesday that the assassination of Russian Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, for which Ukrainian intelligence has claimed responsibility, was “not a good idea at all.”
In an interview on Fox News, Kellogg said that while the killing of Kirillov is not a “setback” for Ukraine, “there are rules of warfare, and there are certain things you just don’t do.”
He later added that the attack, which involved a bomb planted in an electric scooter, was “carrying it a little bit too far” and “not a good idea at all.”
Kellogg also said that he believes both Moscow and Kyiv are ready for peace negotiations, comparing the war to a boxing match:
Think of a cage fight. You’ve got two fighters and both want to tap out. You need a referee to kind of separate them. And I think President Donald J. Trump can do that, he’s got a vision to do that.
On Tuesday, Reuters reported that Kellogg plans to visit Kyiv in January.
