Your mom, your guidance counselor, your pastor, your wife, and your best friends have the highest and best intentions for you.

But they have given you horrible advice.

“You can be anything you want to be,” they say. “Just plan the work, and work the plan.”

It’s not that it’s bad advice actually.

It’s just ineffective and incomplete.

Western culture has taught us that success is a linear path that can be achieved by a carefully calculated plan.

But I have met zero successful people who’s life went according to plan.

Sure, they will look in their rearview mirror and tell you all of the steps that got them to where they are today. But rewind 3, 5, and 10 years to the past, and they couldn’t have told you what those steps would have been if their life depended on it.

Yet the default mode for anyone longing for change is to:

1. Stop

2. Analyze all of their options

3. Wait to take action until they have the right amount of experience, qualifications, degree, money, right timing, or other illusive “permission” to take the next step.

The most successful of my friends will all tell you;

There will never be someone show up and tell you that you’re ready, this is the right time, or that you have permission to move forward.

The truth is that the perfect timing can’t be seen through the windshield. It can only be seen through the rear view mirror.

And the only way to get it in the rear view mirror, is to move forward in an uncertain direction.

Here’s the good news:

1. Once you get moving, you will know very quickly what is working and what isn’t working

2. Because you live in America, you can always pivot

3. Making a wrong move now will always lead you to the right one soon.

The fork in the road is never very far away. And that fork will lead you to wonderful places.

Find the fork, my friend.

You have everything you need to start right now. Today. This moment.

I can’t wait to hear all of the wisdom that will soon be beaming from your rear view.

Cheers,

BW
