The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Detroit Tigers 4-1 Tuesday night thanks to a 4-run 5th inning allowed by the Phils.

Ranger Suarez looked to be cruising through his first 4 innings of the night but then everything went wrong for the MLB ERA leader. After back-to-back hits by the Tigers, Trea Turner misplayed a ball off he bat of Ryan Kreidler that could have lead to at least getting the lead runner at third maybe even a 6-5-3 DP, but instead allowed the grounder to bounce off the heil of his glove. The “misplay” was ruled a hit. Matt Vierling was the next man up and recorded an RBI on a ground out to Turner. Then Andy Ibanez drilled a liner to center field for a 2-run single. Again, another misplay by the Phillies here could have helped limit the damage. Ranger Suarez did not back up Rafeal Marchan behind home plate on the Ibanez hit, but instead stayed in front of Marchan and cut off a throw from Cristian Pache that could have stopped the 3rd run of the inning from crossing the plate.

The Phillies bats were limited to just 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 HBP as the Tigers’ lefty Tarik Skubal kept them off balance all night. Bryce Harper recorded two of the Phillies hits, a double in the 2nd and a solo homer in the 8th, his 20th of the season.
