The 162 game regular season has begun. Why do we do this? Why do we follow this long season every year?

For me, your pal Sully, I have found it has fulfilled several parts of my life beyond simply enjoying a game.

Following the whole season is like being engrossed in a novel with twists and turns and an ending that nobody can predict but will seem so obvious in retrospect.

Also the baseball season satisfies the rituals, community and faith that many get from their religion.

And most importantly, baseball satisfies a need for friendship with other fans, broadcasters, podcasters and the players.
