Join us on the next episode of "Living Well Together," where we have the honor of hosting Retired Lieutenant Colonel Fred Pumroy, a distinguished veteran with a rich tapestry of experiences that span both military service and community involvement. Growing up on a farm in Kouts, Indiana, Fred's early years were filled with the joys of sports, leading him to excel in basketball, baseball, track, and cross-country. His dedication and prowess in track and cross-country earned him a scholarship at Ball State University, where he also joined the ROTC and ignited his journey into a remarkable military career. After graduating in 1964, Fred embarked on his service with the Air Force, skillfully flying various aircraft and contributing to significant operations, including the Iranian Hostage Raid in 1980. His military journey also included significant educational pursuits and leadership roles, such as attending the Defense Systems Management College and participating in the B1A Bomber program, highlighting his dedication to both personal growth and serving his country.
Beyond his military accomplishments, Fred's commitment to his community is equally impressive. After retiring in 1985, he ventured into business, consulting with the Air Force until 2015, and took an active role in local governance and community projects in Fairborn, Ohio. Elected to the Fairborn City Council in 1999 and serving as Deputy Mayor from 2008-2009, Fred's passion for enhancing the small-town atmosphere of Fairborn shines through. He is deeply involved in consolidating resources for the betterment of the community, from aiding families in need to supporting the expansion of services for seniors. Fred's efforts to unite the resources of Fairborn's churches to assist the homeless and his participation in local Rotary and Lions Club activities underscore his unwavering commitment to fostering a supportive, collaborative community. Additionally, Fred is the author of the book "Born To Live On The Edge: Experiences from living on a farm to flying combat sorties in Vietnam to retirement," which chronicles his life's journey and is available on Amazon.
