Hillsboro School District Weekly Hot News, September 2, 2024 - Attendance Awareness Month
Manage episode 437210106 series 3382288
September is Attendance Awareness Month! Regular, on-time attendance is essential to students’ education. Too many absences - excused or unexcused - can keep students from succeeding in school and in life. Did you know that missing just two days of school per month means a student loses 10% of their instruction for the school year? Learn more about the importance of attendance, download an attendance tracker, and see support strategies on our website. Of course, attendance does not take priority over your health! If you are ill, please follow the too sick for school guidelines and stay home until you are feeling better.
Our featured student is Harvey P. from Brookwood! Each summer, Unitus Community Credit Union and the Hillsboro Hops team up to honor “Barley’s Buddies.” Buddies are students in grades K-6 who show determination, perseverance, and grit. Buddies receive a one-of-a-kind day at a Hillsboro Hops game that includes a stadium tour, gift bag with jersey, team interaction, club seats for all family members as well as the staff member who nominated them, and more. Ten students were selected this summer, including Harvey. He attended the Hops game on Wednesday, July 17th, along with his family and teacher, Michele Powers. “Harvey threw out the first pitch of the game - he was so nervous,” Powers explains. “I had the privilege of helping him and his family learn the rules of baseball and watching their eyes fill with joy over the first crack of the bat!” Many thanks to Unitus, the Hillsboro Hops, and Ms. Powers for providing this amazing experience; and way to go, Harvey! You make us Proud to be HSD!
The first day of school for students in grades 1-6, 7, and 9 is Wednesday, September 4th. Students in grades K, 8, and 10-12 will join them on Thursday, September 5th. Please remember that on Wednesdays school starts 30 minutes later than normal for students in middle and high school, and ends 30 minutes earlier than normal for students in elementary school. Visit our website for a chart showing the start and end times for each school. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue.
