The Government has changed the law to make it easier for the police to restrict where and how we protest, and it’s set to do so again in the coming months. For many, freedom of assembly is essential to a healthy democracy.

Is this the end of protests? Are the new policing laws an unprecedented power grab or a necessary corrective to protect public life? When the issue is as serious as the climate crisis, is there an argument for civil disobedience?

Our panel answer these questions and more:

  • Ian Browne, Good Law Project’s legal manager and host for the event
  • Roger Hallam, activist and founder of Extinction Rebellion
  • Parm Sandhu, former Met Chief Superintendent
  • Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, author and founder of Women in Leadership
  • Tom Wainwright, a leading lawyer in the field of protest law at Garden Court Chambers

This was first broadcast as a livestream on the 15th June 2022.
