Sophie Schnietz is a student at UC Berkeley, in the process of earning her Master of Architecture, and a former Peace Corps volunteer. Sophie served in Rwanda as an English Language instructor for Middle & High School Teachers at Muhazi Secondary School. Furthermore, she taught multiple sections of 7th and 8th grade students, pioneering new programs in IT, Leadership, and Gender Equality. During her time, Sophie would not only win a Small Projects Assistance Grant for 2 million Rwandan Francs, to refurbish her school’s library, but she would also go on to share her experiences with U.S. and Rwandan officials. In this episode, Sophie and I talk through her decision to join Peace Corps, the influence of the Rwandan Genocide on her service, and her evacuation from Rwanda in 2020.
