In this episode of The Glow Up Season Podcast, I talk about the powerful impact of communicating with “I” statements. Listen inas I explain what an “I” statement is and how to use them in conversation, along with examples that’ll help you understand this concept fully. This communication tool can be used in romantic relationships, friendships, work relationships, and everywhere in between!

“You never wash the dishes!”

“You clearly just don’t care!”

“You’re late, you’re so inconsiderate!”

“You don’t even care about what I have to say!”

Do those sound familiar? No shame, no judgement, we’ve all been there.

Emotions like anger, disappointment, and frustration can get in the way of effectively listening and expressing ourselves, especially in conflict. When we’re experiencing strong feelings and emotions during a conflict, we often turn to “you” statements, like the statements listed above. For me, the arguments stopped and my relationships improved when I started using “I” statements and started taking accountability for my emotions. I was finally able to communicate and listen properly and I want to pass on this valuable lesson to you!

“Choosing the right words during an argument or an important conversation can be the difference between resolving our issues or making them worse.”

In This Episode You Will Learn:

How our emotions can get in the way of listening and communicating (3:42)

What happened when I started using “I” statements (6:06)

The formula for how to use an “I” statement (9:33)

Examples of “You” statements vs. “I” statements (10:53)

People cannot read our minds. (20:51)

Questions I Answered:

What is an “I” statement? (7:40)

How can I better improve my communication with “I” statements? (11:47)

How do I share this tool with my family, friends, or partner? (20:12)

“I” statement formula: I feel ___ when ___ because ___. I would really like it if you ___.
