Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 57 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Wednesday morning 28 August 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a crazy 24 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning!
In Rugby Union: Flying Fijian, Semi Radradra is stuck in Fiji and he could miss the start of the new Top 14 season for Lyon, who have a 07 September opening game vs Montpellier.
A report in top French magazine L’Equipe says that Radradra was travelling back to France without a visa for his son, who is less than a year old, born in France and is listed on his father’s passport.
So, Radradra, Lyon and the French Embassy in Fiji are sorting out the delay.
This weekend sees Manu Samoa take on Tonga in Apia on Friday and the USA versus Canada on Sunday, with Mick Byrne and the Flying Fijians on a bye.
And in Rugby League: In one of the tightest finishes to an NRL season; the Storm, Roosters, Sharks and the Panthers are inside the Top 4, jostling for finals positions with the Bulldogs, Cowboys and Manly.
Currently in 2nd on 36 points, +269 differential: It’s simple for the Roosters – beat Canberra and Souths and they’ll finish second.
The Sharks in 3rd also on 36 points, on +204 dif: Face a winnable game against the NZ Warriors this week, before a final round blockbuster against Manly for second spot.
In 4th the Panthers on 36 points, +158: To finish second and lock in a home qualifying final, the Panthers need to beat the Rabbitohs and the Titans.
In Football: From this season, 36 clubs will start the Champions League, giving four more sides the opportunity to compete against the best Clubs in Europe.
The Top 8 sides in the league will qualify automatically for the round of 16, while the teams finishing in 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out play-off.
Teams who finish 25th or lower will be eliminated.
What is not mentioned is that every Club will make a ton of cash!
In boxing: Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority - promoters of the World Heavyweight title fight between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on 21 September, which also features a performance by Liam Gallagher, are targeting a new British record attendance.
“We’ve requested to extend the capacity at Wembley Stadium and we hope to set a record for the largest attendance in boxing,” Alalsikh said.
Having sold out of their initial allocation of 90,000 tickets, they hope to attract in excess of 94,000 to Wembley, making it the biggest fight ever in Britain and post-war Europe.
In Sportsbiz: A new roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium for the US Open, sees the prize pool up by 15% to US$75Million, the largest sum for any individual event in tennis history, while the men’s and women’s champions will each receive US$3.6M, up by 20% from 2023.
Event organizers are targeting one million fans in total attendance - unprecedented in tennis history.
Thank you umpire and thank you ball boys – I wonder how much they get paid?
Staying with the US Open: Their popular Honey Deuce cocktail will cost US$23 a pop - maybe that should be a slurp!
Anyway, it will cost a dollar more than it did 12 months ago, when more than 450,000 Honey Deuces were sold for nearly US$10M in sales.
So, Honey Deuce, part of Grey Goose’s official sponsorship of the US Open, is the tournament’s signature cocktail; made with vodka, lemonade, raspberry liqueur and honeydew melon balls, all inside a commemorative cup.
In addition, Grey Goose has been placing Honey Deuce on hundreds of restaurant and bar menus throughout the Big Apple, to push demand even higher.
But it has a challenger – not Kava, but Maestro Dobel Tequila is bringing back its “Ace Paloma”, which debuted last year @ US$21, made of tequila, lime, grapefruit soda, a dehydrated grapefruit slice, and a black-salt rim, also in a US Open souvenir cup.
So cheers big ears!
And that’s a wrap peeps
