Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 09 Episode 62 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 08 June 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.
In rugby union: The opening Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal last night saw the Waikato Chiefs rumble the Queensland Reds 21-43 in Hamilton.
The ruthless and clinical Chiefs ran in four unanswered first-half tries to lead 31-0 at the break and set up the demolition job.
Today, we tip the Hurricanes to rambo the Rebels in Wellington, the Fijian Drua to bimbo the Blues at Eden Park and the Brumbies to hullaballoo the Highlanders in Canberra.
In rugby league: Kevin Walters has come out firing at the NRL, declaring Joseph Sua’ali’i’s four-game suspension for his high shot on fullback Reece Walsh “not enough”.
Sua’ali’i, who was sent off in the NSW Blues loss to Queensland in ORIGIN 01, accepted the four-game ban that was handed down by the NRL’s match review committee yesterday.
However, speaking to reporters ahead of his team’s game against Cronulla, Walters urged the NRL to do more to protect Walsh and the other “great players” in the sport.
In Football: Spanish Coach Luis de la Fuente has surprisingly dropped Barcelona wonderkid Pau Cubarsi from his Euro 2024 squad yesterday.
Cubarsi enjoyed a sensational breakthrough season at Barca, aged just 17.
Spain is in Group B with Croatia, Italy and Albania in EURO 2024 starting next weekend.
In the NBA: A first-quarter explosion from Kristaps Porzingis inspired the Boston Celtics to a dominant 107-89 win over the Dallas Mavericks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
Porzingis, who had missed 10 playoff games with a calf injury and last played on 29 April, showed no signs of rust as he scored 18 points in the opening quarter.
In fact, Boston’s 37-20 first quarter lead is the largest in NBA Finals history.
Jaylen Brown scored a team-high 22 points while also making a big impact on defense with three blocks and just as many steals.
Luka Doncic, meanwhile, had a game-high 30 points for Dallas to go with 10 rebounds but only had one assist as the Mavericks struggled to get anything from their bench.
In SportsBiz: Top French Club Paris Saint-Germain still owes Kylian Mbappé, who just signed with Real Madrid on a free transfer, a bonus and two months of wages, according to ESPN.
The superstar is seeking back pay of US$86Million in compensation for his final season from PSG.
Oh boy, this doesn’t sound like it’s gonna end well for Mbappe.
And that’s a wrap!
