Forgiveness is easy to understand and hard to enact. In our passage today Paul exhorts us to put away all the worldly ways of dealing with offense, and to put on a new way of dealing with hurt, a Christ honoring way of processing offense. A way that doesn't ignore or excuse hurt, a way that doesn't demand recompense or restitution, but rather a way that resembles our savior who sacrificially gave of himself for us while we were still his enemies. But how can we do that? Only by looking to and trusting in Jesus, and letting The Spirit empower us can we freely give costly grace to those who have wronged us.
