The first time a form of the word 'Satan' appears is in Numbers 22:22 where an angel of Yahweh stood in front of Baalam and his donkey to obstruct them, to block their path. The VERB "l'satan", therefore, means to be an obstacle, an obstruction, a roadblock, an adversary, an accuser etc.
Satan and the Satanic force in the world obstructs Yahweh, righteousnes and our spiritual progress. Satan in the Hebrew is HA Satawn meaning THE accuser / adversary / obstacle. He is the one who opposes Yahweh God and righteousness.
