They say ‘if the shoe fits, wear it’, but what if you can’t find any shoes that fit at all?! Back in 2007, Lauren Whiting couldn’t find shoes big enough to fit her feet. So, on a hunch that she wasn’t alone, Lauren naively went about building a business. She took out a loan, rented out a store and imported shoes of many styles and sizes. With a bit of luck, she found a mentor and early customers. Word quickly spread Australia wide, which led Lauren to launch the company online. More than a business, it was a community of people coming together around a common problem. With typical cashflow and staffing pressures, Lauren was also raising a young family. She juggled both side by side, before eventually making the tough decision to shut the business down. But the story doesn’t end there. On top of her physiotherapy qualification, Lauren’s been studying entrepreneurship at the University of Adelaide, and is getting practical with a soon to be launched new startup, Lift Rehab. Lauren shares the highs, lows and lessons learned from her story. This podcast is brought to you by KMT Partners. ×1 Family Business Succession Ep 7: The guidance of a family office to build future opportunity 12:30
This is the seventh and final podcast, in a series of seven, where we interview our very own expert (and Managing Director), Michal Fox. To be successful in a multi-generational family business, sometimes it’s a matter of a conversation with somebody who's got a significant background in this area and having them on hand to assist you in dealing with diverse and complex scenarios. In this blog, we talk about having this type of person available to you as part of your family office.…
In this podcast, we discuss investing outside of the traditional family business. This may sound like an oxymoron but, just as anyone working for or in a business, we want to pay off our house or into superannuation, so that we can prepare for future needs and build wealth. The same is true for aspirations of individual family members in a family business, with the added complication of being in a family business! They may have ambition to provide a future source of wealth, interest and challenge for future generations, so investing in another type of business or industry may become an option. This is the fifth blog, in a series of seven, where we talk about achieving succession and wealth for the next generation. In the interview with our Managing Director and resident family business expert, Michael Fox, he talks about aligned family values as the glue that secures proper governance in a family enterprise. KMT is a leading accounting and wealth management advisory firm in South Australia, assisting you to emerge, renew, grow and build resilience in business, themes which are central to this podcast series. This is the fourth blog, in a series of seven, where we talk about the family enterprise and, in particular, successfully managing succession from one generation to the next. We interview our Managing Director and family business expert, Michael Fox, who speaks about the gems in his recent paper, Riches to Rags in Three Generations. Whether you are a public company or a private enterprise, let alone a family-controlled private enterprise, the future relies on the financial horsepower and the values held by the overall organisation. These values and how they relate to the business and family can nurture every aspect of aspiration, from whether it's employment, ownership, or just being a family member. In this blog, we talk about keeping it together in a family enterprise. KMT is a leading accounting and wealth management advisory firm in South Australia, assisting you to emerge, renew, grow and build resilience in business, themes which are central to this podcast series. This is the third blog, in a series of seven, where we talk about family business succession, along with other issues, in running and managing a family enterprise. In this blog, we talk about conflict. Conflict is inherent in any business but, with a family business, there are also inherent complications. Are you creating foundations and living up to the next generation's social aspirations, and the social aspirations of the founding generation? How can you identify, prevent and manage conflict? All of this is extremely important, often for the extended family’s continued harmony, as well as the health of the business itself. KMT is a leading accounting and wealth management advisory firm in South Australia, assisting you to emerge, renew, grow and build resilience in business, themes which are central to this podcast series. This is the second blog, in a series of seven, where we interview Michael Fox, our Managing Director, about the handover of a family business, from one generation to the next. In this blog, we talk about the challenge of transition, particularly how to do it to ensure business continuity.
The topic of this series is about family business succession. Michael Fox, managing director at KMT Partners, will be discussing some of the fundamentals of family business succession in this 1st episode - Getting your values right and planning to hand over the reins. Professor Adam Steen from Charles Sturt University has worked in several leading business schools both in Australia and internationally, and his research has been published in leading journals globally. Adam’s work cuts across the boundaries of accounting, finance and welfare economics and includes studies which consider the cost of social and economic disadvantage. In this episode though, we focus on Adam’s research into estate planning. The results are startling, to say the least, with most Australians potentially putting their estates and even their businesses at risk .. while also exposing loved ones to an administrative nightmare. Then there’s the impact of digital assets, which most of us are not prepared for. Adam talks about the state of play - what can be done to bring order to our estate planning, and the challenge of raising awareness of the somewhat taboo issue of death and what happens to our personal world when we’re gone.
