“Praise is what joy in God does when obstacles are taken out of the way.” -John Piper
No matter where you find yourself at in your walk with God, we all long to be completely whole, restored, and renewed. As we move into a time of Fall Renewal, meditate over Psalm 51, and respond in any of the areas of it that Holy Spirit leads you to…
↠When we came to Christ in repentance, we needed spiritual renewal, grace. We needed it then, and we need it now. I encourage you, over these next few days, seek the Lord, ask Holy Spirit to bring conviction, open the door of your mind/heart, leave nothing off the table, God renew us, restore us, revive us.
↠Psalm 51 was composed by King David after he was confronted about and convicted by his sin. This was the true response of his heart.
↠The Sin: 2 Samuel 11:2-5/adultery/murder
↠Encounters Nathan:2 Sam. 12:1-13 (why you need Godly people in your life)
↠David, who loved God, is confronted with his sin, a need to repent, be renewed, and his response is whoa is me, I am that man, and verse 13 there “I have sinned against the Lord.”
↠David turns to God and takes responsibility (v.1-5)
↠No hiding or blame-shifting- he owns up to it, he sees his sin rightly
↠We can’t make excuses or re-define sin, we acknowledge it
↠David prays for cleansing (v. 2, 7)
↠David feels the separation that sin creates (Isa. 59:2), and He longs to be back in right fellowship (Ps. 32:2-4)
↠Hyssop (v.7)- a wild shrub, priests would take branches and use them to sprinkle blood on houses to declare them clean/sign of spiritual cleansing
We are now cleansed by the blood of Jesus (1 Jn. 1:7), “hearts sprinkled (Heb. 10:22)”
↠David confesses that he has sinned against God (v. 4, 6)
↠Ultimately, our sin is against God, breaking God’s law (1 Jn. 3:4)
↠”Truth in the inward parts (v. 6)- sin will create a false narrative, false truth that leads to justification, leads to continuance, leading to death (James 1:15)
↠We confess our sin and receive true justification by His blood (Rom. 5:8-10)
↠The plead for renewal (v. 10), he doesn’t want to just settle at forgiveness
↠Maybe you have come in repentance and cleansing, but are still in “time out”
↠Renewal- where true freedom and joy are experienced and demonstrated
↠“Steadfast spirit”- “fixed in purpose, direction, and resolution, unwavering.”
↠We want to be renewed, resolute in spiritual purpose, steadfast gaze on our
goal (Phil. 3). The “right spirit” here is the established, firm, unwavering spirit. King David wants to be finished with the kind of instability that led him to make the mistakes, the sins that just took place. You see, he is dealing with the root of the issues here (Heb. 12:2)
↠There is mercy, confession, forgiveness, cleansing, and renewal to be had, the Father offers it, and we must respond. How will you respond today, this week?
