Gingerbread was often used in religious ceremonies and was baked to be sturdy as it was usually molded into images of saints. In England, gingerbread biscuits were sold around the 17th century in monasteries, pharmacies, and farmers’ markets. The German version of gingerbread cookies is known as Lebkuchen are often heart-shaped and decorated with names and messages of love written in icing.
