“I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’” I remember my parents quoting this almost every Sunday as my sister and I were fighting in the car on the way to church. Psalm 122 is a Psalm of joy anticipating the experience of entering Jerusalem with the people of God. This song for the journey remembered the ultimate destination, Jerusalem, and the goal—to gather with God’s people in His presence to worship. They sang this song to remind themselves that it was a privilege to be chosen by God and included in His glorious purpose. The greatest joy in life happens in knowing God and worshiping Him.
