Ep 155: Hamlet, Madness, Good, and Bad — Does "Thinking Make It So"?
Manage episode 377975029 series 3335753
Rafe discusses Hamlet's statement that "There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so" from Act 2, Scene 2 of the Shakespeare tragedy.
Examining the text and the Nature of the statement in the dialogue, we find that Hamlet asserts this statement while feigning madness; as such, we should consider this statement to be inconsistent with sanity and reality and it should only be correct if one is insane.
There are Truths that are universal and they exist whether or not your thinking makes it so. Only a madman would think otherwise.
