We learn to compare things at an early age.
"She got a bigger piece of cake than me!"
"He's taller than I am."
"She's prettier than her sister."
And sometimes we call things out as being the "top dog" [the best]:
"Charles is the smartest student in his math class."
"Rudy is the best basketball player in the school."

One pronunciation note: remember that better is pronounced with a /d/ sound like "dog": better, better, he speaks better than I do."
And pretty: the comparative is prettier. "She's prettier [pri d er] than her sister."

Let's practice.
1.
This wine is quite good.
I think this one is better.
Ah, but this Spanish wine is the best of all three. Truly exceptional.
2.
I got a good grade in English.
But John's grade was better than mine.
And Mary? She got the best grade in the class.
3.
Is your brother as tall as you?
Actually he's taller than me.
But my father is the tallest person in our family.
4.
Is Bill Gates the richest man in the world?
I don't think so. But he's richer than me!
Who cares? Rich people aren't always very happy.
5.
My mom was happy when I was born.
She was even happier when I finished college.
But she was happiest of all when my wife and I had a baby, and she became a grandmother.
6.
Your cat eats too much. He's really fat.
Ha! You should see our neighbor's cat. He's much fatter than ours.
That's nothing. I saw the fattest cat in the world on youtube. He was bigger than our dog.
7.
Your soup tastes bad.
Well your soup tastes worse.
And Dad's soup tastes the worst of all. Yeech!
8.
What does accelerate mean?
It means to go faster and faster.
9.
The largest planet in our solar system is Jupiter.
10.
Portland Oregon is much bigger than Portland Maine.
11.
This is interesting, that is more interesting, and what you're saying is the most interesting of all.
