Life Lessons from Movies: From “Crash” to “Fight Club” and “Something Borrowed”
“It's interesting that we seem to all kind of get close to movies, that at the core, it's always about the connection that people have with each other. And it's just such a great metaphor for life. But as you go through life, sometimes you really forget that, how powerful and how meaningful making connections, developing relationships—how that really is the essence or the key ingredient of having a full life.”
These words are from Billy Dexter, spoken with conviction and heart, as he is joined by Melissa Wilson and Shevaun Voisin, while they talk in this episode of The Great Exchange, about the movies Crash, Fight Club, and Something Borrowed, which resonated with them and touched the deepest recesses of their being.
Billy gets to share first which he begins by describing the narrative of the movie Crash, including the set of characters, and how their paths cross which then in dialogue and scenes present a story that tackles class, race, family, and gender. He also points out the context of the movie and how the world was changed after the events of 9/11. Further, Billy explains that the reason why he connected with the movie Crash was because of his personal experience being an African-American driving in Arizona, and in a country just recently horrified by the murder of George Floyd, how scared he was when he got pulled over by white cops.
While Billy emphasizes the importance of connecting with people and knowing their stories before judging them, Shevaun takes us to the pit of where the fight is in this life.
And although the first rule of Fight Club is to not talk about Fight Club, Shevaun reveals key details of the movie which stars Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. Shevaun shares that, initially, back in 1999, the reason why she was drawn to the movie was that at that time she was sparring with professional Canadian boxer Donna Mancuso, with Keith Vanderpool as her coach. However, when she watched Fight Club again for x number of times, it was then that she discovered the reason why she connected with the movie—realizing that moment when a person is “really on their knees, at the bottom of the game” which in Shevaun’s case was when she lost her child and her breast in cancer in a span of six weeks.
To cap off, Melissa teases a surprise for the next episode of The Great Exchange, where Colin Egglesfield from Something Borrowed will join the trio and provide an insider view of the movie from his vantage point.
