PDF Manuscript: Proverbs - Everyday Wisdom - Steps to Maturity

Every time you get into your car, you inevitably look at the dashboard. The dashboard provides you with certain information that you need to have close at hand. What speed you’re going. How much gas you left. Then there is other information like the temperature of your engine, and the level of your oil. You don’t watch that constantly, but if the temperature of your engine rises you need to know. All of this information is displayed on a dashboard in front of you.

Imagine what would a dashboard for your soul would look like. There would be different lights, no doubt, alerting you to impulses in your soul. Tendencies that pull you away from God. Tendencies that keep you from moving forward in the Christian life.

Maybe some of those warning lights on your dashboard would be: Fear, pride, greed, self-pity, resentment, anger, lust. In the same way that you and I find vital information on the dashboard of our car, the book of Proverbs opens our eyes to the dashboard of our soul.

John Calvin said that nearly all the wisdom we need comes in two parts—the knowledge of God and knowledge of ourselves. That means you’ve got to know God and you’ve got to know your own heart. That’s exactly why the writer of Proverbs tells us to “keep your heart with all vigilance” (Proverbs 4:23). In our passage this morning, the writer of Proverbs alerts us to three areas of life that need to be on our dashboard. It’s the only way we gain wisdom, and it’s the only way we’ll take steps toward maturity.
