The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a commonly misunderstood illness. If left untreated, the virus can cause AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency) Syndrome. People who are infected with HIV often die from opportunistic infections like flu or cancer. It attacks the immune system making it difficult for the body to fight infection. And because it is a virus, there is no cure.
According to the CDC, 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the United States. There are 13% who are unaware of their HIV status- and need to be tested. The negative stigma surrounding the virus discourages those living with HIV from getting medical treatment or remaining in medical care.
