with a hard hat and tool belt checker pro Joe hey everybody this is a common problem you've probably had this happen before in your home it's that toilet that doesn't stop running sometimes you jiggle the handle and that'll work sometimes you jiggle the handle and it doesn't work you're wasting a lot of money and it's also kind of irritating hearing that water run I've asked an expert in the plumbing field his name is Bob Muller the owner of personal plumbing to join us today on the program to answer the question why does the toilet keep running Bob how are you doing great Joe hey thanks for having me thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day alright is this a simple fix why is the toilet running how can we fix it well it's funny that you asked that question because you know we are professional plumbers we do this for a living and quite honestly this is one of the biggest callbacks that we even have in our own industry which is fixing the toilet and it's still not being fixed so I can tell you that over the years toilets have changed tremendously because you know we went from in the 80s and 90s to the big 5 gallon and three gallon flushing toilets to what we have today which is you know your 1.6 and 1.28 gallon flushing toilets and the technology is completely changed due to the lower you know lower flushing capacities that these toilets have and within these toilets they've had to design many different styles in order for these toilets to actually flush and work so I can first say that that understanding which kind of toilet that you have whether it's a canister style or whether it's the old traditional flapper style toilet that you have that you first got to understand what you're working with and of course toilets and like they're manufactured products which is your OEM products and I always highly recommend that you replace your specific toilets fixtures with the correct products starting with whether it's the flapper or whether it's going to be you know the actual flush valve gasket the old canister style could be that you have a improperly adjusted toilet which is just running over the overflow cause it's just not adjusted properly but the first thing to do is obviously look inside your tank and see where your water's coming from and of course it could be something that's as simple as it could be simple as just an adjustment that needs to be made within the tank it could be that the flapper isn't actually covering the little hole all the way right and that hole is yeah basically where the water drains from the tank into the bowl for it to flush now correct me if I'm wrong when you hear the water leaking it's really not dangerous it's just leaking into the bull right that's correct it's leaking from inside from the tank into the bowl and that bowl leads to this to the plumbing system assuming you don't have any you know leaks at the seal at the base of the toilet but that would usually be indicated by a very obviously from the floor but if it's just leaking into the plumbing system you're just wasting water which is definitely something that you know we try to avoid but you know one way to do it is put a little bit of food color into the top of your tank and then just see if that's going from the tank into the bowl and you should be able to see that color into your bowl and that would tell you whether you have a problem within you know within the tank of your of your system there so that's one way to test it and that's one way that we do thoroughly test our work here yeah personal plumbing to make sure that our clients are well served to make sure that when we leave you know clients house that that that that toilets working properly adjusted properly the correct parts have been put inside the toilet and of course we always wanted to end up with making sure that that toilets also seated correctly and that that the seat is also you know nice and tight for the toilet Bob that's a great point it's very important to everybody that when you're dealing with plumbing in your home you have a professional plumber help you out personal plumbing can help you out with that you do not want to have a water disaster water is devastating when it doesn't stay where it's supposed to stay a good plumber supposed to keep the water in the pipes right so it's very important water is something we need for everything we shower with it we drink it we flush our toilets with it but you have to be careful with it don't take it for granted meaning your fixtures they need to be
